For woodworking, a bevel-edge bench chisel is a versatile starting point; fine hand trimming calls for a paring chisel, while chopping a deep, square mortise calls for a heavier mortise chisel. Metal and masonry require their own chisel types—not a wood chisel.
What is a chisel used for?
Chisels cut or shape material by driving a sharpened edge into it, either with hand pressure or, when the tool is designed for it, a mallet. Their wedge-like edges are a shared feature, not a sign that the tools are interchangeable. The U.S. Navy’s NAVEDTRA 14043A manual distinguishes wood chisels from cold chisels and stresses using each for its intended purpose.
Start with the material, then decide what kind of cut you need. A chisel for wood should not be used on metal or masonry; those jobs call for tools made for those materials.
Which chisel should you choose for woodworking?
For woodwork, choose by the shape of the cut and the force involved. Woodcraft’s Western Woodworking Chisels Info Guide describes the common differences in form and use.

| Type | Best suited to | Design and handling |
|---|---|---|
| Bevel-edge bench chisel | General joinery, trimming, and cleaning up cuts | Bevelled sides can help the blade reach tight corners. It is a versatile general-purpose woodworking category, but not every bench chisel is built for heavy striking. |
| Paring chisel | Fine trimming and finishing cuts | Longer and relatively delicate; use controlled hand pressure rather than treating it as a chopping tool. |
| Mortise chisel | Chopping deeper, squarer recesses for mortises | Heavier construction suits chopping work. Check the handle and maker’s instructions before striking. |
Width matters too: choose a blade that suits the scale of the cut and can be controlled in the available space. Occupational guidance from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recommends using the right size and tool for the job.
How do cold chisels and masonry chisels differ?
A cold chisel is intended for metalworking, not woodworking. The Navy manual warns against using cold chisels to cut or split stone or concrete. Masonry chisels form a separate category for masonry work; check the tool maker’s guidance to confirm the chisel is suitable for the material and the striking tool. There is no single specification that applies to every masonry chisel.

Do not use a wood chisel on metal or masonry, or as a pry bar or wedge. Forcing a tool into an unintended job can damage the edge or tool and make control less predictable.
What should you look for in a woodworking chisel set?
Choose for the work you expect to do, rather than assuming every set contains the same blades or suits every task. A beginner doing general woodworking can look for a wood chisel set with useful blade widths for the joinery and trimming involved. DEWALT’s official chisel category, for example, lists a four-piece wood chisel set; that example does not establish the contents of other sets.

- Thick metal strike cap with flat surface for effective strikes
- Durable construction with lacquered blade to help protect against corrosion
- Tempered, carbon-steel blade with long lasting edge
- Lightweight design with ergonomic handle
- Check each blade’s width and intended use.
- Confirm whether the handle is designed for hand pressure, mallet work, or both, and follow the maker’s instructions about striking.
- For mallet-driven work, use a suitable wooden or plastic mallet unless the tool maker specifies otherwise. CCOHS cautions against steel-hammer blows on chisels not designed for them.
- Inspect the edge, handle, and striking end before use; do not buy or use a damaged chisel.
How do you use a chisel safely?
CCOHS’s wood-chisel safety guidance treats a sharp edge and controlled work as essential safeguards. Secure the stock so it cannot shift, and keep your hands and body behind the cutting edge. Direct the blade away from yourself, and use hand pressure for paring or finishing cuts. Wear eye protection when chips or particles could injure your eyes, including during sharpening.
- Keep the cutting edge sharp; a dull chisel can be harder to control.
- Secure the workpiece before cutting.
- Use a mallet suited to the chisel’s handle and striking design.
- Do not use a chisel as a screwdriver, pry tool, or substitute for a tool intended for another material.
- Do not carry a chisel loose in a pocket.
- Take a chisel out of service if it has cracks, chips, bends, or excessive wear. Discard one with a cracked or chipped face or a mushroomed or flattened head.
How should you sharpen a wood chisel?
Keep the edge sharp and follow the tool maker’s sharpening instructions. The SFS chisel overview describes sharpening with a whetstone and gives about 25 degrees as a typical woodworking bevel. That is an example, not a universal required angle: bevels vary with the tool and intended use, so check the manufacturer’s specifications before changing the angle. Use eye protection when sharpening, and protect the edge in storage so it does not strike other tools.
