For wood, sand with the grain. 3M recommends not skipping more than one grit between steps, but the right starting point depends on the material, its condition, and the finish you want.
How to choose and sequence sanding grits
- Start with the removal task. Choose a grit coarse enough to remove the roughness, old finish, or other material you need to address. The cited 3M guidance recommends beginning coarse and progressing toward very fine; it does not prescribe one starting grit for every project. 3M general-purpose sandpaper guidance.
- Refine in stages. - Check the final product listing. Confirm that the abrasive is intended for your material and that its grade and format suit your tool and task.
Match the abrasive to the material and work area
Material compatibility varies by product. 3M describes its general-purpose aluminum-oxide sandpaper for paint, wood, and metal. Its General Purpose Sanding Pad lists wood, metal, plastic, painted surfaces, and drywall. Check the exact listing rather than assuming that a product suitable for one surface is suitable for another.
Choose a format that fits your technique
Sheets for flat or accessible surfaces
A sheet can be used by hand or on a sanding block. One specific 3M listing is a 9 × 11 inch aluminum-oxide sheet at 220 grit, labeled “Very Fine” by 3M; the listing says it can be used by hand, on a block, or cut to fit a power-tool sander. Flexible pads for contours and tight access
3M describes its General Purpose Sanding Pad as flexible for contoured and hard-to-reach areas, and says it can be used wet or dry. Its listed applications include wood, metal, plastic, painted surfaces, and drywall. Discs for random-orbit sanders
Choose discs that match the sander’s backing and attachment requirements. 3M’s random-orbit sanding guide covers backing and abrasive options and includes ANSI, FEPA, and proprietary grades. The appropriate starting grade depends on how much material must come off and the finish the work requires. The 3M materials cited here offer general progression advice and examples, not a comprehensive grit schedule for every construction material or task. Use the product’s stated applications and specifications, and adjust the progression to the surface and desired result.
