Chlorine bleach usually contains sodium hypochlorite; “non-chlorine bleach” is a broad product category, not a guarantee of a particular formula or result. For laundry, choose by the garment’s care instructions and the product label—not by the front-of-package wording alone. For disinfection, use only a product whose label supports that use and follow its directions.
What is the difference between chlorine and non-chlorine bleach?
Most regular household chlorine bleach contains 5%–9% sodium hypochlorite, according to the CDC. Hypochlorite can whiten laundry and has antimicrobial uses, but it can also discolor fabric and is unsuitable for some materials.

“Non-chlorine bleach” describes a category of products. The term alone does not establish an ingredient, concentration, fabric compatibility, or disinfecting ability. Check the specific product’s active ingredients and directions before use.
Which bleach should I use for laundry?
Start with the garment’s care label, then check the bleach product’s label for approved fabrics, dosage, and use directions. The word “non-chlorine” does not by itself mean a product is safe for every color or fabric; likewise, do not use chlorine bleach on a garment unless its care directions and the product label allow it.

Chlorine bleach
An EPA-accepted label for one sodium hypochlorite 7.5% product, dated February 6, 2026, gives laundry directions for white and colorfast acrylic, cotton, nylon, polyester, and rayon, with a recommendation to test a hidden area first. It excludes acetate, leather, silk, spandex, and wool. These are directions for that particular product, not a rule for every chlorine bleach; follow the label on the product you have. Read the EPA-accepted label.
Non-chlorine bleach
Read the package to identify the active ingredient, suitable fabrics, and directions. No single formula or universal performance comparison applies to every product sold as non-chlorine bleach. If the label does not clearly support use on the garment or stain you are treating, choose another approach recommended by the garment’s care instructions.

Is non-chlorine bleach safe for colors?
Not automatically. Color safety depends on the specific product and fabric. Follow the package directions and garment-care label, and use a hidden-area test when the product label recommends one. Chlorine bleach can discolor fabrics, a limitation noted in the CDC’s guidance on chemical disinfectants.
Can bleach disinfect laundry or surfaces?
Only rely on a disinfecting claim when it is supported by the specific product’s label and the intended use is covered. The CDC cautions that some laundry or splashless bleach products are not appropriate for disinfection, so the word “bleach” alone is not enough to establish that use. For surfaces, follow the product’s label for dilution and contact directions; the EPA advises cleaning surfaces before applying a disinfectant.
Quick Recap
How to use bleach safely
- Follow the product label for dilution, amount, use, and any required contact time. Do not apply laundry directions to a surface or vice versa.
- Ventilate the area well.
- Never mix bleach or disinfectants with other cleaners or disinfectants. The CDC’s instruction is direct: “Never mix household bleach (or any disinfectants) with any other cleaners or disinfectants.”
- Keep the product on label-approved materials and away from fabrics or surfaces the directions exclude.
