The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Guizhou, China, opened to traffic on September 28, 2025. It carries the Liuzhi-Anlong Expressway across a deep canyon, and its bridge-to-river height—not the height of its towers—is the basis for its “world’s highest bridge” record.
What makes the Huajiang bridge the world’s highest?
The bridge crosses the Huajiang Grand Canyon, with the Beipanjiang River below. In 2025, China’s State Council, citing Xinhua, reported that the bridge rises 625 meters above the river. An April 2026 report from the Chinese Embassy in Bolivia said Guinness World Records certified it at 626.01 meters on April 29, 2026. These are distinct reported figures: the first is the government report’s height, while the second is the later certified measurement reported by the embassy. The embassy report identifies the previous record holder as the Beipanjiang Bridge, at 565.4 meters, certified in 2018. The record compares the vertical distance from the bridge to the water below; it does not mean the bridge has the tallest towers or the greatest overall length.
How large is the bridge, and what does it carry?
The road suspension bridge is 2,890 meters long, including a 1,420-meter main span. The 2025 State Council/Xinhua report describes that main span as the largest built in a mountainous area. The bridge forms a key section of the Liuzhi-Anlong Expressway and opened after more than three years of construction, according to the pre-opening report. State Council/Xinhua, 2025.

How much travel time does it save?
Government reporting says the canyon crossing has been cut from about two hours to two minutes. That is a reported comparison for crossing the canyon, not a promise of a two-minute trip between any two destinations or a measure of total journey time. What engineering achievements are reported?
Xinhua reported that the project received 21 authorized patents and that some technical achievements were incorporated into national bridge-construction standards. The report attributed those details to Zhang Yin, head of Guizhou’s provincial transport department. Xinhua, 2025.

Is the bridge becoming a tourist destination?
Reports in 2026 describe growing visitor interest and businesses near the bridge. China Daily mentioned a viewpoint and a hotel operator who said business had improved; the Associated Press described visitors as well as shops, restaurants, and homestays. Anshun mayor and NPC deputy Yin Hengbin framed the opening as both infrastructure and tourism promotion: “The completion and opening of the bridge not only showcases China’s extraordinary development achievements to the world but also adds a new calling card to Guizhou’s tourism.” That is a public official’s characterization, not a measured finding about economic results.
