A household storage chest is a lidded container for items such as blankets, linens, clothing or keepsakes. It is different from a chest of drawers, which is a clothing-storage unit with drawers and a separate tip-over risk profile. When choosing or using a chest, consider its intended contents and dimensions, how its lid opens and stays open, and the maker’s safety instructions.
What counts as a household storage chest?
“Chest” can mean several kinds of furniture. ASTM F2598-22 names sealed storage products commonly called cedar chests, hope chests, blanket chests and keepsake chests. They are intended for clothes, blankets, linens, keepsakes or other household items. The standard listing describes its subject as “consumer safety for clothing storage chests.”
A chest of drawers is different: it stores clothing in drawers rather than in one lidded compartment. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) includes chests of drawers among clothing-storage units addressed in its tip-over guidance. That issue should not be confused with the lid and closure concerns associated with sealed storage chests.
How to compare storage chests
Start with what you plan to store and where the chest will go. Compare the specific product’s dimensions and capacity, then review its lid design and the manufacturer’s instructions. These are practical comparison points, not a guarantee of performance or safety.

- Contents and capacity: Check the intended use and usable internal space against the items you want to store.
- External dimensions: Measure the intended location, including the space needed to open the lid.
- Lid and closure: Note whether the lid has a support, how it behaves as it opens and closes, and whether the product has a latch or lock.
- Safety documentation: Look for the manufacturer’s instructions and any explicit statement about conformity to a relevant standard. A chest’s appearance or category alone does not establish that it conforms to ASTM F2598.
- Assembly and placement: Follow the maker’s instructions, particularly in a home with children.
ASTM F2598-22 is a standard for sealed storage chests such as cedar, hope, blanket and keepsake chests. Its listing says it addresses performance requirements and test methods for lid supports, closures and locks, as well as nonhazardous finishes and materials. The listing identifies the 2022 edition and indicates an update in July 2026; consult the current edition and its full text for exact requirements. Do not infer compliance unless the manufacturer identifies the product accordingly and the claim is supported.
What are the lid and closure risks?
CPSC’s 2014 warning described hazards in some storage and toy chests: a lid could latch automatically and trap a child inside, or a lid support could fail and let the lid fall. The agency noted risks including entrapment in an airtight space, injuries from falling lids and neck entrapment. This warning does not mean every chest is unsafe, but it makes the specific lid and closure worth checking.

In that 2014 warning, CPSC reported 34 deaths involving children younger than 18 since 1996. The figure covers the time window stated by the agency; it is not an annual rate or a count for household storage chests alone.
For a used or inherited chest, identify its maker and model if possible, check CPSC recall information, and consult current manufacturer advice. If a lid support, latch or lock appears damaged or behaves unexpectedly, do not rely on a generic replacement part: ask the manufacturer whether an approved part is available and suitable for that exact chest. CPSC’s 2025 reseller guide discusses replacement hardware for some chests, not a universal repair for every model or hazard.

What if the chest is a chest of drawers?
A chest of drawers has a different principal safety concern: it can tip over. CPSC’s 2022 announcement reported 234 clothing-storage-unit tip-over fatalities from January 2000 through April 2022, including 199 child fatalities. It also estimated 84,100 related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments from 2006 through 2021, an estimated annual average of 5,300 for that period. These historical figures concern clothing-storage units, not sealed blanket or keepsake chests.
Use the CPSC’s clothing-storage-unit guidance and the furniture maker’s instructions for a chest of drawers. Do not apply advice about lidded storage chests as if it addressed tip-over prevention.

How to handle a known recalled chest
Check the exact product rather than relying on a broad category label. Use the maker, model and any identifying details to look up CPSC recall notices, then follow the notice and manufacturer’s remedy for that product. CPSC’s reseller guidance also directs resellers to check recalls and provides safety guidance for storage chests.
One warning is narrowly specific: on May 27, 2020, CPSC told owners of identified Cavalier cedar chests to “remove the latch or lock immediately.” The agency linked three child suffocation deaths in Cavalier chest incidents to the period from 2004 through 2019. This is not a general instruction for all cedar chests; follow the notice only for the identified products and consult the current notice for its scope and remedy.
