Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA wooden charging station can be a desktop caddy, a wall shelf, or a valet tucked under a cabinet. Choose a design based on where it will go, how many devices it must hold, what you want to conceal, and the woodworking methods you can comfortably handle. Before cutting, measure your devices and the actual chargers, plugs, cords, and power strip that need to fit.
Choose a plan by placement and storage needs
These four designs solve different space and organization problems. Their features are not interchangeable, so compare placement, device capacity, storage, and construction before selecting one.

| Desktop caddy | Sits on a desk or counter; device capacity is not stated in the plan listing. | Woodsmith describes a box and tray with two hinged access panels that conceal a power strip and bulky transformers. Brass pins support devices while allowing cables to pass through. Listed materials include poplar and maple; a standard plan and supplemental shop drawings are offered. Woodsmith plan details. |
| Under-cabinet valet | Mounts beneath a kitchen cabinet and hinges down for access; capacity is not stated in the listing. | WOOD Store’s plan includes a tip for using one cord with multiple devices. It was featured in WOOD Issue 217, March 2013; the web page was updated January 9, 2024. WOOD Store plan details. |
| Multi-device station | Freestanding design with slots for four devices. | Minwax describes a drawer and tray for spare batteries, earbuds, and cords. The project is labeled intermediate and involves efficient lumber use, resawing to nonstandard thicknesses, precise layout, gluing, and nailing. Minwax project details. |
| Wall shelf | Wall-mounted; its slots can be sized and shaped around the owner’s devices. | Geoff Coleman’s design conceals plugs and cords in a cavity and hangs from a French cleat. Its construction uses laminated wood, a notched cavity, shaped exterior, and routed device slots. Canadian Woodworking project details. |
Match the design to the room
- Choose a desktop caddy if you want the power strip and adapters hidden on a work surface.
- Choose an under-cabinet valet when counter space is limited and a hinged-down organizer suits the location.
- Choose the four-slot station if you need a freestanding organizer with a drawer and tray for accessories.
- Choose a wall shelf if you want to keep the work surface clear and can securely mount a shelf near an appropriate power source.
Account for tools and joinery
There is no single construction method across these plans. Woodsmith describes simple joinery, hinged panels, and brass pins. Kreg’s plan uses pocket-hole screws and places a power strip inside a box; consult its plan for the specific assembly details. Coleman’s wall shelf uses laminated construction, routed slots, and a French cleat. The sources do not use a common skill-rating system, so compare the actual operations with your tools and experience rather than treating the designs as equally demanding. Kreg plan details.
Measure the devices and charging hardware before cutting
Slot and cavity dimensions should follow the equipment you own, not a generic phone size. Measure each device with its case on, the charger body, plug, cord exit, and power strip. Check how the cord bends and whether a connected device can sit in its slot without pulling or pinching the cable. If you expect to change devices later, leave sensible clearance and make the slots accommodate the largest likely device.

Coleman’s wall-shelf project gives a cavity example of 2½ inches wide by 4 inches high by 2¾ inches deep for its plug-and-cord arrangement. The project notes that an older charger with its cord inserted may extend about 3½ inches from the wall. Those are dimensions for that design, not universal specifications: compare them with your actual charger, plug orientation, cord, and wall clearance before adapting the cavity. Project dimensions and notes.
- Measure the power strip’s full physical dimensions, including its cord and any bulky plugs.
- Check that the outlet and strip can be reached for access; a hidden compartment should not make replacement or repositioning needlessly difficult.
- Lay out device slots around the widest cased device and leave room for the cable to pass through without a sharp turn.
- Confirm the finished station’s footprint and clearance at its intended location, including access to hinged panels or a pull-down valet.
Some documented designs hide a power strip inside the station, but that does not establish that every strip fits or that any particular electrical arrangement is suitable. Follow the selected plan and the electrical product instructions; the woodworking project descriptions are not general electrical safety guidance.

For the wall-mounted design, Coleman describes laminating wood around a notched central cavity, shaping the exterior on a bandsaw, sanding, and routing the device slots. He recommends routing the slots before trimming the shelf to its final size: the larger blank provides a more stable surface for router support. Make a layout on the blank first and verify the cavity and slot positions against the measured hardware.
The project’s French cleat uses opposing 45-degree bevels. Coleman discusses attaching the cleat to a stud or, for a narrower shelf, using hollow-wall anchors. Those options are specific to the project context; mounting suitability depends on the shelf, load, wall, fasteners, and installation. Do not assume an anchor or cleat arrangement is adequate without checking the plan and the conditions at your wall. Coleman’s construction and mounting discussion.

Quick Recap
Before you build
- Pick the location. Decide whether the station belongs on a desktop, beneath a cabinet, or on a wall, and check that the selected form can be accessed where it will sit.
- List what it must hold. Count devices and identify the chargers, power strip, cords, earbuds, spare batteries, or other accessories that need space.
- Choose a matching plan. Compare capacity, concealed storage, hinges or drawer features, and required operations such as pocket-hole assembly, resawing, laminating, or routing.
- Measure actual hardware. Record device and case sizes, charger and plug dimensions, cord exits, and power-strip footprint. Transfer those dimensions to the plan before changing any cavity or slot.
- Check plan details and availability. Plan listings can change; confirm current instructions, materials, dimensions, and included drawings with the plan provider before purchasing or cutting.
