Marty Marfin’s 2015 Make tutorial demonstrates that method with a gypsum-cement prototype, but it does not show that the casting is safe, durable, or permitted for use in a real reef. Treat the process as a moldmaking example, not as authorization to place a DIY casting in a waterway.
How the hollow-sphere mold works
The mold has to capture both the sphere’s outside and its interior while still flexing enough to release the casting. In Marfin’s demonstrated setup, a two-part silicone mold encloses the master model, while a separate flexible hollow plug occupies the space intended to become the cavity.
The tutorial describes a reef unit designed in Rhino and made as a powder-bed 3D print. Marfin strengthened the printed model by infiltrating it with cyanoacrylate glue. He explicitly warned that the glue was toxic and described using skin, eye, and respiratory protection in a well-ventilated space. That was preparation of the printed master—not a recommendation for reef construction material. See Marfin’s Make tutorial.
Build the two-part mold
- Establish the parting line. Marfin used an inflated balloon against the spherical master to establish the mold’s division. The demonstrated arrangement is specific to his model and setup.
- Make the first mold half. He mounted the model on a plywood/Masonite base, added registration features to align the halves, and built foam-core walls around the mold area before pouring silicone.
- Prepare the second half and cavity former. For the second pour, the tutorial adds pour spouts and a hollow wooden cylinder used to create a flexible plug. The plug must flex enough to come out of the cast piece without breaking it.
- Demold carefully. Once the mold material has cured, separate the halves and remove the master and plug as appropriate to the mold design. The mold’s flexibility and the plug’s release are central to making a hollow casting rather than trapping the core inside.
The tutorial names SR-1621 silicone mixed at a 10:1 base-to-catalyst ratio and describes overnight curing. Those are the materials and instructions reported in a 2015 project; check current manufacturer instructions, safety data, and availability before using any product. Marfin also describes pigment and hand mixing. His casting demonstration used canola-oil spray as a release agent, but the article does not establish that this product or any of the casting materials is suitable for marine deployment.

Cast a prototype, not a reef-ready unit
For the demonstration casting, Marfin used FGR-95 gypsum cement and let fragile castings set overnight. This illustrates how the mold can make a hollow form; it does not establish the gypsum-cement casting’s marine compatibility, structural strength, long-term stability, or approval for placement in a reef.
Do not place a DIY casting in a waterway on the strength of this tutorial. NOAA-hosted artificial reef guidance states, “All materials used in reef construction should be of proven stable design,” and identifies function, compatibility, stability, and durability as design considerations (NOAA-hosted artificial reef guidance). NOAA’s National Ocean Service describes limestone, steel, and concrete as common materials in long-lasting artificial reefs and warns against illegal dumping presented as habitat creation (NOAA artificial reef overview). Texas Parks and Wildlife also emphasizes material complexity, stability, durability, compatibility with the marine environment, and applicable permits (Texas Parks and Wildlife artificial reef materials guidance).

Rules depend on the location. For example, USACE Alabama general-permit guidance says cured concrete used in fabricated reef units may be used if it is clean of solid waste and construction debris, while green or uncured concrete is not authorized under that guidance. This is Alabama-specific guidance, not a universal standard (USACE Alabama general-permit guidance). Any real deployment needs site-specific design and evaluation, plus authorization from the applicable agencies.

Marfin describes units approximately 3 feet in diameter and explores closest packing, linear placement, and stacking two layers. These are design explorations from the 2015 project, not a standard reef specification or evidence of ecological performance. The tutorial reports an earlier 100-unit concrete reef at Point Pinole and describes designs developed with Christopher Lim of The Watershed Project for Point Emery and Point Molate; those project-history details do not establish current approval or deployment status.

| Design choice | What the tutorial explores | What must be assessed for a real project |
|---|---|---|
| Closest packing | Arranging spheres tightly to use space efficiently. | Site-specific stability, habitat function, and whether the arrangement is compatible with the permitted design. |
| Linear placement | Placing units in a line rather than packing them together. | Stability and performance under conditions at the proposed site; the tutorial provides no measured comparison. |
| Two-layer stacking | Stacking one layer of units on another. | Structural and site stability. The source does not quantify stacking performance. |
| Flexible plug production | Using a flexible hollow core to form the sphere’s interior. | Whether the plug can be made and released reliably at full scale; Marfin notes this could be difficult. |
| Two-hemisphere alternative | Considering two identical hemispheres as a modular alternative. | How the halves would be joined and whether the resulting unit meets project design and authorization requirements; the tutorial gives no tested solution. |
For scale-up, Marfin suggests an inflatable bladder as a possible way to form the interior instead of relying on a rigid core. It is a proposed approach, not a validated production method. The tutorial supplies no measured ecological outcomes or performance statistics for the hollow spheres.
