For an automotive air-conditioning leak detector, choose a model that explicitly supports R-134a and check for documented SAE J2791 compliance. CPS LDA1000H, INFICON AST200IR and Robinair 22791 are manufacturer-documented options; the available specifications do not establish an independent “best overall” winner. The product details below are manufacturer claims unless otherwise noted.

What matters when choosing an R-134a leak detector

  • Refrigerant compatibility: Confirm the detector specifically lists R-134a. A detector’s support for another refrigerant does not establish R-134a compatibility.
  • SAE J2791: Look for a published statement of compliance when shopping for an electronic probe detector for motor-vehicle AC service. SAE International’s current catalog entry, SAE J2791_202505, revised May 16, 2025, sets testing and functional requirements intended to help identify smaller refrigerant leaks in motor-vehicle AC systems. It is not a safety certification and does not establish suitability for every refrigerant. SAE International: SAE J2791
  • How sensitivity is specified: A number in ounces or grams per year is meaningful only with its stated test method, mode and operating conditions. Manufacturer figures using different methods are not a reliable head-to-head ranking.
  • Serviceability: Check whether the sensor, filters or cartridges are replaceable, and verify compatibility with the exact model before ordering.
  • Working conditions: Consider battery type and runtime, indicators, recalibration features and the detector’s instructions for use in contaminated areas.

What SAE J2791 tells you—and what it does not

SAE International describes J2791 as a standard for testing and functional requirements for electronic probe-type refrigerant leak detectors used in motor-vehicle AC service. The stated aim is to help detectors identify smaller leaks, including in systems with improved sealing and smaller refrigerant charges. The standard’s catalog scope explicitly says it does not address safety issues concerning detector design or use. SAE International: SAE J2791

ASE’s August 2024 training material describes J2791 as setting minimum performance requirements for electronic detectors used with R-134a MVAC systems. It gives three selectable detection scales: 4 g (0.15 oz.) per year, 7 g (0.25 oz.) per year and 14 g (0.5 oz.) per year. ASE also says manufacturers must provide a list of common underhood chemicals that may cause false triggering, and notes that older J1627 detectors are not as accurate or sensitive as J2791 detectors. Those details are ASE’s description of the standard, not a separate review of the full SAE document. ASE training material on MVAC leak-detection methods

Compliance is a useful selection criterion, not a guarantee that every leak will be found in every situation. Read the instructions for the exact detector and account for possible false triggers and the conditions under which its sensitivity is specified.

Manufacturer-documented R-134a detector options

These models have published R-134a support. Their specifications come from their manufacturers; they were not established by an independent comparative test. Sensitivity figures below use different descriptions and should not be treated as a common-scale ranking.

Model R-134a and stated standards Sensing and sensitivity claim Power and service details
CPS LDA1000H CPS lists R-134a and R-1234yf support, and says the detector meets SAE J2791, SAE J2913 and EN 14624. CPS describes proprietary EMOS pulse-modulation sensing and claims detection of leaks smaller than 0.1 oz per year. The page does not specify a measurement method alongside that figure. CPS states up to 500 hours of sensor life and 50 hours of battery life using three C batteries. It lists audible and visual indicators and a two-year warranty, excluding sensor and batteries. Replacement parts listed are EMOS2 sensor, LS2XF filter pack and LS2XVF vapor-filter sensing tip. CPS LDA1000H specifications
INFICON AST200IR INFICON lists R134a and R1234yf and lists SAE J2791, SAE J2913 and EN14624:2012. INFICON specifies an infrared sensor and sensitivity of 1 g (0.03 oz.) per year per EN 14624. INFICON lists a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, filter cartridges, a replacement sensor and an R134a reference leak. The product page does not establish that the reference leak is required for ordinary leak detection. INFICON AST200IR specifications
Robinair 22791 Robinair lists CFC, HFC, HCFC blends and HFO-1234yf detection, and says the unit complies with SAE J2791 for 134A and SAE J2913 for 1234yf. Robinair describes an infrared detector with three sensitivity levels, down to 0.15 oz./year. The product page does not give a measurement method alongside that lowest figure. Robinair lists an eight-hour lithium-ion battery and automatic recalibration in contaminated areas. Robinair 22791 specifications

For the CPS and Robinair claims, the pages do not give the same sensitivity method as INFICON’s EN 14624 figure. Do not infer that CPS’s “less than 0.1 oz per year,” INFICON’s 1 g (0.03 oz.) per year or Robinair’s “down to 0.15 oz./year” establishes a winner: the figures are not presented on a common basis.

How to interpret sensitivity figures

A leak rate expressed per year is a specification, not a promise that a detector will locate a leak under all field conditions. Check whether the manufacturer names a standard or operating mode and whether the figure applies while the probe is stationary or moving.

For example, Johnson Controls’ PENN RLD-H10PRO page, in a catalog revised April 12, 2020, states approximate sensitivity in manual small-leak mode of 0.006 oz./year stationary and 0.1 oz./year moving per SAE J2791. The same page lists a heated-diode sensing element, roughly one-second response and two-minute warmup. Because the catalog information is from 2020, verify current product status before treating this as a current buying option. The stationary-versus-moving distinction also shows why sensitivity figures cannot be compared without their conditions. Johnson Controls PENN RLD-H10PRO catalog information

SENSYX HVAC Refrigerant and Combustible Gas Leak Detector, Rechargeable
  • RECHARGEABLE LITHIUM BATTERY: A 2500mAh built-in lithium battery delivers up to 24 hours of continuous work on a single charge, so the detector is ready whenever a call comes in. Charges from any USB-C power source; cable included. No disposable batteries to buy or carry.
  • HIGHLY SENSITIVE SENSOR: Japanese-made metal-oxide semiconductor sensor responds to the full halogenated refrigerant family, with selectable High and Low sensitivity so you can sweep an area broadly first, then switch down to close in on the exact joint.
  • BEFORE YOUR FIRST JOB: Like all metal-oxide sensors, this detector reaches full sensitivity after running for several hours - leave it switched on in clean air when it is new or has been in storage. In use, switch it on in clean air away from the leak, then move the probe no faster than 1 inch (25 mm) per second, about 1/4 in from the joint, with fans and drafts off. This is what separates a found leak from a missed one.
  • BROAD RANGE DETECTION: Both SFD200 and SFD201 respond to the full halogenated refrigerant family - CFCs: R11 R12 R113 R114; HCFCs: R21 R22 R31 R121 R122 R123 R124 R141b R142b R401a R402a R402b R408a R409a R509a; HFCs: R23 R32 R41 R125 R134a R143a R152a R404a R407c R410a R417a R507 R508a R508b; HFOs: R-1234yf R-1234ze R449a R452b R454a R455a R456a R457a R459a, and more. In addition, SFD201 also detects HC and combustible gases including R50/Methane, R170/Ethane, R290/Propane and R600a/Isobutane, plus natural gas, LPG, gasoline vapor and alcohol.
  • LIVE PPM READING: A large color LCD shows the actual concentration in ppm plus a bar graph, so you can watch the number climb and narrow down to the exact joint instead of guessing from faster beeping. The buzzer follows the reading as well and can be muted when you need to work quietly.

Electronic detectors and fluorescent dye are different methods

ASE identifies electronic detectors and fluorescent dye detectors as two primary approaches to locating MVAC refrigerant leaks. An electronic probe detects refrigerant at the probe; dye inspection relies on compatible fluorescent dye and UV illumination to reveal a leak location. Dye is an alternative method, not a required add-on to every electronic detector. Follow vehicle and equipment guidance to confirm compatibility before using dye.

CPS also lists an LDA1000UV model with a clip-on UV light and lists replacement pieces compatible with the LDA1000H. These are relevant if you are considering UV inspection or maintaining that specific compatible detector; confirm the exact model, vehicle and dye compatibility before purchase or use. Which one should you choose?

  • For a standards-led shortlist: Compare the CPS LDA1000H, INFICON AST200IR and Robinair 22791, all of which have manufacturer-published R-134a support and stated SAE J2791 compliance.
  • If the published test basis matters most: INFICON explicitly ties its 1 g (0.03 oz.) per year figure to EN 14624. That makes the method clearer in the specification, but does not prove superior real-world performance over the other models.
  • If replaceable parts matter: CPS lists a replacement sensor and filter parts; INFICON lists filter cartridges and a replacement sensor. Check the manufacturer’s exact part compatibility before ordering.
  • If you need longer stated battery runtime: CPS says up to 50 hours on three C batteries, while Robinair lists eight hours on a lithium-ion battery. The figures are manufacturer specifications, and battery types and operating conditions differ.
  • If you want to inspect with UV dye: Consider a compatible dye-and-UV approach separately from the electronic detector, and verify vehicle, dye and equipment compatibility.
