Chainsaws can expose operators to hazardous noise and hand-arm vibration. Reduce risk by choosing suitable lower-noise, lower-vibration equipment, maintaining it, limiting exposure, working with a relaxed grip, and wearing hearing protection that fits and suits the task. No single control removes every hazard.
How loud is a chainsaw?
NIOSH reported chainsaw noise exposures of 91–110 dBA in forestry and logging work. That range describes occupational exposures in the cited settings; it is not a universal sound rating for every saw or a prediction for every operator. Actual exposure depends on the equipment, task, distance and time spent near the noise. NIOSH’s forestry and logging overview discusses the work context.
NIOSH says repeated exposure around 85 dBA for eight hours or more can damage hearing, and identifies chainsaws among sources averaging 95 dBA or higher. These figures are context, not a safe-time guarantee for a particular chainsaw. Noise dose depends on both sound level and duration. NIOSH’s workplace noise guidance explains the hearing risk.
How do I protect my hearing when using a chainsaw?
Use a layered approach rather than relying on earplugs or earmuffs alone. NIOSH advises reducing noise through controls before relying solely on personal protective equipment. For chainsaw work, HSE recommends suitable hearing protection, low-noise and low-vibration saws, and proper maintenance.

- Includes one pair of Husqvarna Professional Headband Hearing Protectors, One Size Fits Most
- Husqvarna Chainsaw Protective Gear: These headband hearing protectors are designed to provide hearing protection while using power equipment
- Comfortable Wear: Headband ear protectors feature a lightweight, flexible, padded headband and clamshell ear muffs for maximum comfort and full coverage
- Professional Protection: Hearing protection rating 25dB(A) NRR
- Versatile Outdoor Use: Ideal for everyday professional use with any outdoor product, including trimmers, blowers, mowers, and chainsaws
- Choose suitable equipment. When selecting a saw, consider manufacturer-stated noise and vibration characteristics alongside the job it must do. Choose equipment appropriate to the task rather than assuming all saws expose operators equally.
- Keep the saw maintained. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule. A well-maintained saw is one part of managing noise and vibration; maintenance does not remove the need for exposure controls.
- Limit exposure. Reduce time spent operating or working close to chainsaw noise where the work allows. Plan breaks or rotate tasks to manage exposure.
- Wear suitable hearing protection consistently. Choose protection that provides adequate noise reduction, fits correctly, is comfortable enough to wear throughout the task, and is compatible with other required PPE. Workers should know how to fit and use it. NIOSH’s hearing-protection guidance covers selection and use.
Can chainsaw vibration damage your hands?
Repeated hand-arm vibration can contribute to hand-arm vibration syndrome, including vibration white finger, and other hand and arm problems. OSHA identifies several factors that affect risk: the saw’s vibration level, time spent using it, grip and position, and exposure to cold or wet conditions. Risk cannot be judged from the saw alone.
How can I reduce hand-arm vibration exposure?
- Select a saw with the lowest vibration level suitable for the work. HSE notes that low-vibration designs may include anti-vibration mounts or heated handles; these features do not make the saw risk-free.
- Maintain the saw according to its schedule and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Manage time using the saw with rest breaks or job rotation where practicable.
- Avoid gripping the handles more tightly than necessary, while keeping safe control of the saw.
- In cold conditions, keep hands warm; warm gloves can help. Do not treat gloves as a substitute for exposure controls.
- Do not assume anti-vibration gloves alone prevent injury. No single accessory eliminates vibration risk.
OSHA’s vibration guidance describes these risk factors and controls. HSE’s UK publication, Chainsaws at work INDG317, covers chainsaw safety measures, including suitable low-vibration equipment and maintenance.

What are the warning signs of vibration-related problems?
Possible early signs include intermittent tingling, fingertips turning pale or white, and short-lived pain. Symptoms can progress to numbness or reduced sense of touch, blanching across more of a finger, reduced grip strength, severe pain, reduced dexterity, or arm pain and weakness. These symptoms are warning signs, not a diagnosis.
Report symptoms promptly through the appropriate workplace process and seek occupational-health evaluation or medical advice. Early reporting helps an employer assess exposure and whether work practices or controls need attention. NIOSH also describes vibration syndrome in its Vibration Syndrome publication.

What should employers and workers consider?
Employers and workers should assess noise and vibration in the context of the actual job, equipment and exposure duration, then apply suitable controls and ensure workers understand how to use them. The cited guidance comes from different jurisdictions: OSHA and NIOSH are U.S. sources, while HSE is UK guidance. Legal duties and requirements differ by location, so follow the applicable local occupational-safety rules.
