Are Mushrooms Growing in Your Potting Soil? Causes, Plant Health and What to Do

Mushrooms in a pot usually reflect fungi feeding on organic matter under moist conditions. Find out when they may affect plant health, how to handle unknown mushrooms safely, and what changes can discourage more growth.

Mushrooms in potting soil usually mean fungi are feeding on organic material in the mix and conditions are moist enough for them to produce visible fruiting bodies. They do not automatically mean your plant is sick. But an unknown mushroom should never be treated as edible or safe around children or pets, and a struggling plant deserves a closer check of its watering, drainage and roots.

Why mushrooms grow in potting soil

Potting mixes often contain organic materials such as bark, wood chips, moss or leaves. Many fungi that appear in pots are decomposers: they use this dead material as food. Their threadlike body, called mycelium, can remain in the soil or debris even when no mushroom is visible. The mushroom is the reproductive structure, not the whole fungus. Spores can arrive in the potting mix or land there from the air, according to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

Fruiting is more likely when a pot stays warm, moist or humid, has poor drainage, or contains abundant organic matter. Low light may also accompany mushroom growth in potted soil, notes the University of Florida IFAS Extension. These conditions can support fungi without proving that the plant itself is diseased.

Will the mushrooms harm your plant?

Often, the mushrooms themselves are not harming a healthy plant. UF/IFAS says many fungi found in potted plants are not plant pathogens, though some fungi that cause disease can also produce visible fruiting bodies. A dense fungal mat can become water-repellent and interfere with water and nutrient uptake.

If the plant is declining, do not assume the mushroom caused it. Check whether the mix stays excessively wet, whether the pot drains properly, and whether roots or stems show signs of rot. Very hot, wet conditions can also favor fungi and bacteria that cause root or stem diseases, according to UF/IFAS.

Are mushrooms in a houseplant pot poisonous?

You cannot determine a mushroom’s identity or safety from its appearance alone. Small lemon-yellow mushrooms in a houseplant pot are often the yellow houseplant mushroom, Leucocoprinus birnbaumii, according to Iowa State Extension. It decomposes dead organic matter and does not harm living plants, but it is poisonous to people and animals. Keep any unknown mushrooms away from children and pets, and do not eat them. If children or pets can reach the pot, remove visible mushrooms as they appear.

What to do about mushrooms in your pot

  1. Remove visible mushrooms. Pick them off and discard them, especially if children or pets might reach them. Removing the visible mushroom does not show that the mycelium beneath the soil is gone.
  2. Adjust watering to suit the plant. Avoid keeping the mix persistently wet. Let it dry to the level appropriate for that plant rather than withholding water indiscriminately.
  3. Check drainage. Make sure excess water can leave the container. A different pot is worth considering only if the current setup genuinely lacks adequate drainage.
  4. Improve drying and airflow where appropriate. Reduce overhead watering and water at the base of the stem if that suits the plant. For an indoor pot, a cooler or less humid location may make conditions less favorable for new mushrooms.
  5. Loosen the surface lightly. Gently rake or loosen the top layer of soil or mulch to help it aerate and dry. This may discourage further fruiting, but it does not prove the fungus has been eliminated.

Fungicide is not a dependable fix for the yellow houseplant mushroom: Iowa State Extension says fungicide treatments are generally ineffective against it. If the plant continues to decline or you need to know whether a particular mushroom is hazardous, seek help from a local extension service or another qualified identifier.
