Yes—lavender can grow indoors if you can provide strong light and fast-draining soil. It is less forgiving than many houseplants: a dim room or persistently wet pot can lead to weak growth and few flowers.
What indoor lavender needs
The main challenge is light. UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County recommends at least 5–6 hours of bright light from a sunny window. If that is not available, its guidance is to use supplemental fluorescent or LED lighting for 14–16 hours a day (UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County; publication year not stated). Michigan State University Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of direct sunlight each day for abundant flowers; with less light, lavender may survive but produce fewer flowers (Michigan State University Extension Ask Extension, 2026).
Put the plant at your brightest window and judge the direct light it actually receives, rather than how bright the room seems. If using a grow light, follow the maker’s instructions for placement and operation; the cited guidance does not specify a lamp wattage, distance, or model.
Choose a pot and growing medium that drain freely
Lavender grows in containers, but its roots should not sit in wet soil. Delaware Extension recommends low-fertility, well-drained soil and confirms that container growing is suitable (Delaware Extension). Choose a pot with unobstructed drainage holes. Terracotta is one option because it can help excess moisture escape; it is not required (Michigan State University Extension Ask Extension).

If your potting medium holds too much water, loose or gritty material such as perlite can improve drainage (NC State Extension). The available guidance does not establish a required pot size, so choose a container that accommodates the plant and allows excess water to drain.
Water and feed sparingly
Do not follow a rigid weekly watering schedule. Check the growing medium and the plant: established lavender tolerates drought better than saturated soil, which can promote root disease (Iowa State University Extension). Indoor watering needs vary with the pot, room, and season, and the extension guidance does not give one interval that fits all of them.

Lavender prefers low-fertility soil. Heavy feeding, especially with high-nitrogen fertilizer, can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers (Delaware Extension; Iowa State University Extension).
Pick a cultivar with realistic expectations
Delaware Extension lists Ellagance Purple, Munstead, and Hidcote Blue among successful cultivars; Munstead and Hidcote Blue are described as compact. Compact growth may suit a smaller space, but those descriptions do not establish that any cultivar is best for permanent indoor growing.
