No—not in a gas fireplace or gas insert. Burn only the fuel and media approved for the exact appliance in its owner’s manual. Wood can expose a gas appliance to higher peak temperatures, which its manufacturer warns may permanently impair the appliance and create fire danger.
Why wood is not approved for a gas fireplace
Gas fireplaces and inserts are designed for specified gas fuel and approved media, not logs of firewood. Mendota says its gas fireplaces and inserts are designed and certified to burn LP or natural gas only, and states: “No other materials may be burned inside a Mendota gas fireplace or insert.” That statement applies to Mendota products; check the manual for your own make and model rather than assuming another brand has the same authorization. The concern is not just whether a log fits in the firebox. Mendota warns that wood’s higher peak temperatures can permanently impair its appliance and create fire danger. Do not try wood as a test or rely on appearance to judge whether an appliance can handle it.
First identify what kind of fireplace you have
A gas appliance can be installed in a former wood-burning fireplace, and decorative gas logs can be installed in a wood-burning fireplace. Those are different configurations with different instructions. Appearance alone is not a reliable way to determine approved fuel.

- Gas fireplace or insert: Use only the fuel and media listed for that appliance in its manual.
- Wood-burning fireplace with decorative gas logs: Follow the log-set instructions. The cited VSR instructions prohibit burning wood or other solid fuels while that gas log set is installed. VSR gas log set instructions
- Uncertain or changed installation: Find the rating plate and model number, then check the owner’s and installation manuals or ask a qualified fireplace technician to identify the system.
If the fireplace used to burn wood
A previous wood-burning firebox does not necessarily remain approved for wood after a gas insert or log set is installed. In one Regency insert manual excerpt, wood or other solid fuels are prohibited after conversion unless all original parts are replaced and the authority having jurisdiction re-approves the fireplace. Before considering a return to wood, have the manufacturer or a qualified fireplace technician assess the exact appliance and installation. Local approval requirements may also apply. What to do instead
- Keep using the gas appliance: Follow the rating plate and model-specific manual, including its approved fuel and media.
- Have gas logs in a wood-burning fireplace: Check the gas log set manual; do not burn wood while a set that prohibits solid fuel is installed. Ask a qualified technician to assess any proposed change.
- Want to return a converted fireplace to wood: Get model-specific guidance and determine whether parts must be restored and local re-approval obtained.
- Want a wood fire or wood heat: Consider a separate appliance designed for wood, such as a wood-burning fireplace or insert, after checking that it is suitable for your home and can be installed appropriately. There is no generic accessory that authorizes wood burning in an existing gas fireplace. A wood-burning appliance is a separate option, not an add-on that makes a gas unit safe for wood.
