A garden can make it easier to pause, notice what is changing, and spend time outdoors. Start with how you want to use it—a quiet seat, a gentle stroll, growing food, or time with others—then shape the route, seating, planting, and sensory details around that purpose. The result need not be silent or permanently serene: it should feel usable and personal, with room for different moods and seasons.

Start with the way you want to use the garden

Before choosing plants or paving, decide what you want the garden to make possible. A place to sit and watch birds needs different clear space and sightlines from a route for gentle walking or a small area for growing herbs. If the garden serves several purposes, give each activity a legible place rather than asking one corner to do everything.

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Wellbeing Garden Blueprint for home gardens sets out seven principles: accessibility, wayfinding, serenity, multisensory planting, spatial organisation, exploration and play, and cultural artefacts and significance. Use them as prompts, not a rigid formula: consider who will use the garden, how they will move through it, where they can pause, and what might invite gentle discovery. The blueprint was developed with the University of Surrey through a global review and case studies, drawing on more than 12 years of RHS-led research. Read the RHS Wellbeing Garden Blueprint: Home Gardens.

Make access and wayfinding part of the design

Plan a clear, comfortable route to the places people will actually use, and include a safe, stable seat with a useful view. Consider turning space, surface changes, steps, reach, shade, and the needs of anyone with limited mobility or vision. The RHS blueprint’s accessibility principle is to “Ensure every space can be reached, used and enjoyed by everyone – regardless of age, disability, or need.” Simple landmarks—such as a distinctive planter, a change in planting, or a view toward a focal point—can help visitors understand where they are without adding clutter.

Create a place for the eye to rest

Mindful observation does not require a dramatic focal point or a constant display of bright flowers. A largely green palette can still feel varied when foliage differs in shape, size, height, and texture. Layering groundcover, mid-height plants, and taller planting gives the eye details to follow while preserving a sense of cohesion. The RHS forest-bathing guidance also recommends green layers and visual variety, including for small spaces. See the RHS guide to creating a forest-bathing garden.

In a compact courtyard or balcony, work vertically with suitable containers, climbing plants, or shelves, but keep routes and seating usable. In a larger garden, planting can help define a quieter nook or soften the view of a boundary. Choose the degree of enclosure that feels comfortable: a retreat can be sheltered without becoming difficult to enter or see into.

Use planting to engage more than one sense

Think in sensory roles rather than searching for a universal list of “calming plants.” Scent, touch, sound, movement, colour, and even taste can make ordinary moments outdoors more noticeable. The RHS describes sensory planting as a way to engage smell, sound, taste, touch, and sight; these are design possibilities, not evidence that a particular plant treats anxiety or another health condition. Sensory quality Ideas to consider Planning note
Scent Lavender, scented shrubs, or aromatic foliage such as mint Choose plants for the light, soil, climate, and mature space available. Put fragrant plants where their scent can be noticed, for example near a seat or path.
Touch Lamb’s ear for soft, downy foliage; other plants may have smooth, leathery, feathery, or fleshy leaves Place touchable foliage within comfortable reach. Wash hands after handling plants, as the RHS advises.
Sound and movement Rustling grasses, birdsong, or the sound of moving water Grasses respond to wind; a water feature adds upkeep and may not suit someone who prefers quiet.
Sight and seasonal change Contrasting leaf shapes, layered greens, and plants that flower at different times Plan for interest across the seasons as well as the appearance of the garden when first planted.
Taste Mint and other edible plants Identify each edible species correctly and check household safety and local suitability before planting or eating.

For more on contrasting foliage, see the RHS guide to coarse and fine foliage. Some plants can irritate skin or be unsuitable around children or pets, so check household safety before planting and supervise tasting. Suitability also depends on local hardiness, sun and soil conditions, and the plant’s eventual size.

Make calm practical, not prescriptive

A quiet-feeling garden does not have to be silent or impose one mood. The RHS describes wellbeing gardens as spaces that can support a range of emotions and needs. A sheltered seat, a view of water, birdsong, seasonal change, or a more open place to walk may offer different kinds of pause. If nearby noise is intrusive, planting and enclosure can help shape the experience, but no feature can guarantee that every person will feel calm.

The RHS blueprint recommends shaping restorative spaces through “sound management, planting choices, enclosure, and sensory balance.” Consider what you want to hear and see before adding a water feature or powered accessory: both have practical requirements, and a natural soundscape may suit you better than mechanical noise. The RHS community and organisations blueprint discusses reflection, calm, seasonal interest, water, and birdsong as elements of wellbeing gardens.

Choose plants for the site and the seasons

Use the “right plant, right place” principle: match each plant to the light, soil, exposure, moisture, and space your garden actually offers. Check mature height and spread so paths, seating, and sightlines remain clear as planting grows. For a resilient scheme, combine plants suited to the conditions rather than forcing a high-maintenance display into an unsuitable spot. The RHS sensory planting guidance offers examples, but exact choices should reflect your location and garden conditions.

Think beyond the first flush of flowers. A mix of foliage, scent, movement, and flowering times can make the garden worth observing at different points in the year. If you are planting in containers or a small border, begin with a few well-matched plants and leave room for them to establish rather than crowding the space.

Make the garden recognisably yours

A garden can feel more welcoming when it reflects the people who use it. Familiar plants, a cultural reference, a meaningful object, or a place to grow food can give a space identity and a sense of belonging. Keep personal elements connected to how the garden is used: a keepsake near a seat, for example, or herbs beside an outdoor eating area. The aim is not to decorate every surface, but to make the garden feel lived in and meaningful.

What wellbeing evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The RHS science summary reports that the RHS State of Gardening Report 2025 found gardening has an impact on the lives of over 41 million people in the UK. That figure describes the report’s finding about gardening’s impact; it is not a count of people diagnosed with improved mental health, nor does it show that a particular garden design causes a specific clinical outcome. Read the RHS summary of the science behind its Wellbeing Garden Blueprint.

Gardening and garden design may provide supportive opportunities to pause, use the senses, and spend time outdoors, but they are not substitutes for mental-health care. The RHS also provides an overview of mental health and wellbeing and how gardening can help.
