Successful Farming’s 2024 account of Steve Leitner’s crane does not establish a safe capacity, provide structural calculations, or verify that its support would work in another building. Before lifting anything, have the complete crane and its supporting structure evaluated for the intended load, reach and installation.
What the published build includes
In “Build Your Own Swinging Jib Crane,” published by Successful Farming on April 30, 2024, Cory Hall describes Leitner’s shop project. The article reports these components; they are features of that one build, not a construction specification or recommendation for a particular capacity.
| Component | Reported in the example | What the description does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Main pole | 6-inch irrigation pipe | Material grade, wall thickness, design strength or suitability as a mast |
| Swivel and swivel support | 6½-inch pipe, with O-shaped plates welded to act as large washers | Dimensions and details needed to verify the rotating joint, bearing surfaces, pins or welds |
| Jib beam | 6 × ¼ × 10-foot I-beam | Beam section properties, allowable load at the intended reach or connection design |
| Tensioning and gusseting | ½-inch cable and ⅜-inch plate | Material specifications, cable terminations, connection details or calculated forces |
| Hoist | Pittsburgh Automotive 400-pound hoist | The completed crane’s rated capacity; the hoist rating applies to the hoist, not automatically to the entire assembly |
| Trolley | Two Haul-Master push beam trolleys joined with ½-inch plate cut to size | Compatibility with the beam flange, combined capacity, or adequacy of the connection |
The builder also warned: “Make sure to insert bolts at the end of the I-beam, or you may be in for a big surprise when the trolley runs off the end of the beam.” That advice highlights a real travel hazard, but bolts mentioned in an article are not a verified stop design. A stop must be suitable for the trolley, beam and expected forces.
Why the example does not establish a safe lifting capacity
A crane’s capacity cannot be inferred from its hoist rating, a few component dimensions or the appearance of a weld. Load travels through the hoist and trolley, jib beam, connections, swivel, mast, anchorage, supporting column or wall, and ultimately the foundation. Each part and connection must be suitable for the load at the intended reach and under the actual installation conditions.

Successful Farming’s account does not provide structural calculations, material certifications, a weld procedure, a rated capacity for the completed crane, or verification of its supporting structure. Consequently, it is not possible to calculate a safe capacity from the article. A 400-pound hoist in the example does not mean the finished crane is rated for 400 pounds.
Have a qualified structural or mechanical engineer review the actual design and support before using a homemade crane. That review should address the intended load and reach, the complete load path, the support and anchorage, the beam-and-trolley match, the swivel, connections and welds, and a suitable travel-stop arrangement. Do not treat a seller’s plan capacity or another builder’s component list as a substitute for that evaluation.

Check the support, trolley and operating context
Supporting structure
The building support is part of the crane, not a convenient place to attach it after the design is settled. DIY Welding Plans, a seller of column-mounted plans, warns that the supporting column must withstand the imposed loads and that its design is not intended for ordinary 2×4 house framing. That is a vendor warning, not independent engineering validation; the support at your site still needs to be evaluated for the specific crane and use.
Beam, trolley and end stop
Before selecting a trolley, establish from the actual product documentation that its capacity and flange range match the beam. Joining two trolleys, as in the reported build, does not by itself establish the capacity of the combined arrangement. The beam, trolley connection and stops need to be considered together, including the possibility that a moving trolley could reach the end of the beam.

Workplace rules in the United States
For U.S. general-industry workplaces, OSHA’s 29 CFR 1910.179 covers overhead and gantry cranes, including wall cranes; OSHA guidance says the standard applies to overhead or gantry cranes permanently installed in a facility. The classification and applicable federal, state, local and workplace requirements depend on the specific equipment and use, so confirm which rules govern your installation.
Where 29 CFR 1910.179 applies, it defines rated load as the maximum load for which a crane or individual hoist is designed and built by the manufacturer and shown on equipment nameplates. The standard calls for the crane’s rated load to be plainly marked, inspections before initial use and on frequent or periodic schedules based on service and exposure, and operational tests before initial use. Its rated-load test provision says test loads must not exceed 125% of rated load unless otherwise recommended by the manufacturer. That is a limit for a test provision, not an operating capacity or an invitation to proof-test an unevaluated homemade crane.

OSHA’s construction provision at 29 CFR 1926.1433 addresses design, construction and testing for equipment with a manufacturer-rated hoisting or lifting capacity above 2,000 pounds. It is not a general design recipe for a homemade shop jib crane; do not assume it governs your situation without checking the provision’s scope and applicable requirements.

| Option | What the available descriptions say | What to verify before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| DIY example | Successful Farming describes Leitner’s project but gives no verified capacity for the completed crane. | Capacity at intended reach, structural attachment and foundation, swing clearance, compatible beam/trolley/hoist/stops, material traceability, fabrication quality, applicable inspections and testing, and installed cost. |
| Column-mounted plans | DIY Welding Plans markets a two-ton design and warns that the support column must withstand imposed loads. | Whether the plans’ assumptions match your materials, fabrication, support and site; the seller’s capacity claim is not independent verification. |
| Wall-mounted plans | GizmoPlans lists a 4,000-pound capacity claim. | Whether the design and its required wall or column support suit your actual installation; the listing’s claim is not independent verification. |
| Manufactured crane | Capacity and installation requirements depend on the specific product; no particular model is established here. | Manufacturer-rated capacity at the required reach, mounting requirements, compatible hoist and trolley, clearances, inspection and testing requirements, and installed cost. |
For any option, ask how its rated capacity applies at the reach you need, what structure and anchorage it requires, how far it swings, and whether its beam, trolley, hoist and end stops are compatible. Also account for material documentation, fabrication quality, applicable workplace requirements and the total installed cost—not just the price of a plan or hoist.
Quick Recap
What to do before lifting a load
- Define the job. Establish the load to be handled, its position and the required reach and swing arc. Include clearances and the path the trolley will travel.
- Choose a design basis. Decide whether to pursue a professionally reviewed custom build, a plan set or a manufactured crane. Treat published builds and vendor capacity claims as references to verify, not as approval for your installation.
- Evaluate the whole support and load path. Have a qualified structural or mechanical engineer assess the crane design, connections, anchorage, building support and foundation for the intended use.
- Verify component compatibility. Check current manufacturer documentation for the selected hoist and trolley, including capacity and beam-flange fit. Confirm that the stops and connections are designed for the assembly rather than copied as an unverified detail.
- Confirm applicable requirements and commissioning. Determine which workplace and local rules apply. Where OSHA 29 CFR 1910.179 governs, follow its applicable marking, inspection and operational-test provisions; do not substitute a test load for an established operating rating.
- Do not lift until the rating and support are established. If the design, support capacity, equipment compatibility or applicable requirements remain unresolved, do not put the crane into service.
