A low-pressure propane source is an engineered supply system, not a universal set of parts: regulators reduce pressure from the container or an upstream stage to the level required by the downstream piping and connected appliance. Its pressure, capacity and layout depend on the appliance and installation, so a trained propane professional must design, install and verify it.
What “low pressure” means in a propane system
In this context, “low pressure” commonly refers to the propane pressure in the piping between the final regulator and the appliance. It is often expressed in inches of water column (in. w.c.). That description alone does not specify a working system: it does not identify the required delivery pressure, regulator capacity, pipe size or installation layout.
RegO’s pipe and tubing selection guide explains low-pressure piping in inches of water column. It also warns that its diagrams are illustrative, not designs for an actual installation. A design has to match the appliance instructions and nameplate, the full system and locally applicable requirements.
What determines the design
Before selecting equipment or laying out piping, a qualified professional needs the details of the particular job. The title alone does not establish them.

Appliance requirements and total demand
The appliance nameplate and manufacturer’s instructions identify its fuel requirements. The professional must account for the connected appliances and their combined demand when evaluating regulator capacity and the supply piping. A generic description such as “low pressure” cannot establish compatibility.
Container, regulators and piping route
The container type, regulator arrangement, distance to the appliance, piping material and route all affect the design. Regulator models can have different delivery-pressure targets; a model name or a general “low-pressure” label is not proof that a regulator suits a particular appliance or system.

Installation setting and local requirements
Indoor or outdoor conditions, the proposed route and the rules adopted in the installation’s jurisdiction matter. RegO’s guide cites NFPA 54 (2021) and NFPA 58 (2024); those are the editions cited in that guide, not confirmation of which requirements a local authority has adopted. The applicable code, manufacturer instructions and site conditions must be checked for the actual project.
How a professional verifies delivery pressure
Pressure verification requires suitable test equipment and test points for the system. RegO identifies a low-pressure gauge kit for checking regulator delivery pressure at appliances. Having a gauge does not establish the design or make installation and commissioning appropriate for an untrained person.

RegO’s service manual describes a diagnostic procedure in which a technician measures delivery pressure with approximately half of the total appliance load operating, then checks whether pressure is maintained at full load. The manual gives 11 in. w.c. at the appliance for that procedure, but cautions that an appliance regulator may be preset by its manufacturer to a lower flow pressure. Treat the figure as the manual’s diagnostic guidance—not a universal setting or target. The appliance nameplate and instructions govern the requirement for that appliance.
What information to provide before work begins
To scope the installation, give the propane professional the information available about the site and equipment:

- Connecting outlet: 5/8" Unf
- Incompatible with Bunsen burner
- Installation location and jurisdiction, so applicable local requirements can be determined.
- Container type and any existing regulator arrangement.
- Appliance nameplates and manufacturer instructions, plus the appliances intended to operate from the supply.
- The proposed appliance locations and piping route, including relevant indoor or outdoor conditions.
The professional can use those details to establish the system design, select compatible equipment, determine piping and verify operation. Do not infer a parts list, regulator setting, pipe size or connection layout from the phrase “low-pressure propane.”

The Propane Education & Research Council’s Installing Propane guide states: “Propane system installations should always be performed by trained propane professionals.” The guide also says it does not replace pertinent regulations. For a construction project, involve a qualified propane professional early enough to coordinate the supply design with the appliance locations and building work.
