You can build a LEGO model that tears small pieces of paper, but it is a maker demonstration—not a practical office shredder. The key is to make separate gear sets grip the paper and tear it; simple interlocking gears are more likely to crumple paper or stall the motor.
How the LEGO paper shredder works
The Brick Experiment Channel’s early design illustrates why gear layout matters. Interlocking gears first crumpled a small paper slip. Adding more gears punched holes, but the mechanism eventually stalled the LEGO motor. A later arrangement used different-sized gears for different jobs: one set held the paper while another pulled and tore material away. Bevel gears added a blade-like action that produced smaller fragments. These are qualitative observations from a demonstration, not controlled performance measurements. The principle is useful for prototyping: a gear train must do more than rotate. It needs to hold the paper firmly enough for another part of the mechanism to tear it, without loading the motor until it stops.

A practical approach to building a prototype
The published accounts do not provide a complete parts inventory or step-by-step shredder plan. Treat the following as design guidance, not exact assembly instructions.

- Build a stable frame with two supported shafts. Keep the shafts aligned so the gears mesh and the paper can pass through the working area.
- Try a narrow paper strip first. Use interlocking gears to explore how the mechanism feeds paper, but watch for crumpling or a motor that slows or stops.
- Separate the gripping and tearing jobs. Arrange gear sets so one holds the strip while another pulls material away. The reported design used different-sized gears, but the source does not establish a specific gear ratio or spacing.
- Experiment with bevel gears as a tearing feature. In the reported build, adding bevel gears produced smaller fragments. Their effect will depend on the particular layout and how the paper is held.
- Change one feature at a time. If paper crumples, slips, or the motor stalls, adjust the grip, alignment, or gear arrangement before adding more gears.
LEGO Technic gears, including bevel gears, are a sensible category to look for when sourcing parts, but the reports do not confirm an exhaustive bill of materials or a currently available set containing everything needed. Hackaday reports that the demonstrated design would not come close to processing a full A4 page. The Brick Experiment Channel’s October 12, 2024 version 2 video description says the revised design improved reliability and reduced cut size, and reports testing a piece of regular 90 g printing paper. That is creator-provided information about one test material, not an independently measured capacity or general performance guarantee. See the version 2 video description.
