The best choice for walking on roof shingles is lightweight roofing footwear with nonslip, puncture-resistant soles and a secure fit—not a particular brand proven safest. NIOSH describes useful features such as moderate sole stiffness, rear-foot motion control and flexibility at the front of the shoe. Even suitable footwear cannot make a roof safe without fall protection and sound decisions about roof condition, access and weather.
What footwear features matter on shingles?
NIOSH recommends lighter boots with nonslip soles and puncture-resistant soles for roof work. Its guidance also describes specialty roofer shoes with a combination of support and flexibility. These are selection characteristics, not the results of a comparative test or a ranking of products.
- Nonslip soles: Look for footwear identified as slip-resistant. NIOSH does not establish a universally best outsole compound or tread pattern for every shingle surface.
- Puncture-resistant soles: Roofing work can involve sharp debris and fasteners; NIOSH includes puncture resistance among its recommendations.
- Secure fit: A tight, well-fitting shoe helps keep the foot stable inside the footwear.
- Moderate stiffness with front flexibility: NIOSH’s specialty-roofer-shoe description balances a moderately stiff sole with flexibility at the front.
- Rear motion control: NIOSH includes control at the rear of the shoe as a selection characteristic.
- Manageable weight: Lighter boots are part of NIOSH’s guidance for walking on roofs.
For a product search, use a category phrase such as “roofing work boots slip resistant puncture resistant.” The cited guidance supports these general features, but does not establish a best brand, model, price or product tested on shingles.
Should you choose high-cut boots or low-cut roofer shoes?
Choose based on fit, traction characteristics, support and the task; ankle height alone does not establish shingle traction. NIOSH notes that a high-cut shoe or safety boot may be preferable for balance on flat, narrow planks. That plank-specific advice should not be treated as proof that a high-cut boot grips shingles better.

Whatever the cut, the shoe should fit securely and have the sole characteristics appropriate to the work. Do not assume a shoe marketed for roofing is slip-proof or suitable for every roof material and condition.
How to move on a roof—and when not to walk
NIOSH suggests zigzagging uphill and taking shorter steps with feet apart when crossing a slope. These movement suggestions are not a substitute for a safe work plan or fall protection. NIOSH’s roofing leaflet states: “Walking the right way is no substitute for fall protection.”

Do not walk on a roof when its surface or the weather makes footing hazardous. OSHA’s residential-roofing directive says operations should be suspended when high winds, rain, snow or sleet create hazardous conditions. It also calls for identifying and mitigating slip hazards and using appropriate footwear. Decisions must account for the specific roof and site conditions.
Footwear does not replace fall protection
For employees working six feet or more above lower levels, OSHA’s residential-construction FAQ describes a requirement for protection using conventional methods or other measures allowed for the particular work. OSHA describes a restraint system as rigged to prevent a worker from reaching a fall hazard. Applicable requirements and permitted methods depend on the work; consult current OSHA standards and use competent, site-specific judgment.

Shoes are not a fall-protection measure. A harness or anchor by itself does not make a job safe: equipment must be appropriate and compatible with the work, correctly installed, and used by trained workers.
NIOSH’s June 2022 leaflet reports approximately 400 roofers injured and 37 killed by falls each year. Those figures are estimates reported in that 2022 publication; the leaflet does not specify a separate underlying statistical year, so they should not be read as verified annual counts for 2026.

Do tarp and plank advice apply to shingles?
Not automatically. OSHA’s roof-inspection and tarp-repair eTool says to keep damp tarps from being walked on until they are dry and suggests considering flat-soled, ANSI-approved slip-resistant shoes for tarp work. That is tarp-specific guidance, not a shingle-specific shoe test. Likewise, NIOSH’s high-cut footwear note concerns balance on flat, narrow planks rather than a guarantee of grip on shingles.

Practical selection checklist
- Look for lightweight roofing footwear with nonslip and puncture-resistant soles.
- Check that it fits securely and offers the combination NIOSH describes: moderate sole stiffness, rear motion control and front-end flexibility.
- Match footwear to the actual surface and task; do not treat advice for planks or tarps as proof of performance on shingles.
- Assess roof condition, access and weather before work. Suspend operations if conditions create a hazardous surface.
- Plan fall protection separately, using the method required and permitted for the specific work.
