OSHA’s construction standard covers power-operated equipment that can hoist, lower, and horizontally move a suspended load; its examples range from mobile and tower cranes to overhead, gantry, and specialized cranes. The list is broad, not a single universal taxonomy.
What distinguishes the main crane families?
The most useful first distinction is how a crane is supported and moved: it may travel on wheels or tracks, stand on a tower, or move a load along a fixed runway. Those broad categories are not interchangeable, and each contains configurations whose capabilities depend on the specific model.
Mobile cranes
Mobile cranes are a broad family of cranes mounted on wheeled vehicles or chassis. Common forms include rough-terrain and all-terrain cranes, commercial truck-mounted cranes, and boom trucks. Their defining distinction is mobility as a category: the precise travel conditions, setup needs, reach, and lifting limits vary by model and configuration.
Crawler cranes
A crawler crane has a base mounted on a continuous belt of sprocket-driven track. That describes its undercarriage, not a universal lifting capacity, ground-pressure rating, or ability to travel with a suspended load. Those details must be checked for the particular machine and job.

Tower cranes
Tower cranes are erected on a tower and use a jib or boom to position loads. OSHA names three configurations:
- Fixed-jib (hammerhead): a fixed jib configuration.
- Luffing-boom: a boom that changes angle as part of its operation.
- Self-erecting: a tower-crane type designed to erect itself.
These are configuration labels, not a ranking. Which one suits a site depends on its layout, required lifts, and the selected crane’s specifications.

Overhead and gantry cranes
An overhead crane has a movable bridge that travels on an overhead fixed runway structure. A gantry crane is similar, but its bridge is supported by two or more legs that run on fixed rails or another runway. OSHA also includes semigantry, cantilever gantry, wall, storage bridge, and launching gantry cranes in this family. These systems are distinguished by their runway and supporting structure rather than by road mobility.
Specialized cranes and related equipment
Construction work can also involve articulating or knuckle-boom cranes, floating cranes, locomotive cranes, industrial or carry-deck cranes, pedestal cranes, portal cranes, straddle cranes, and sideboom cranes. OSHA’s scope also covers derricks and equipment configured to perform crane functions. These are specialized categories; their inclusion does not mean they are equally common on ordinary building sites.

How to compare crane types for a project
Start with the site and the lift rather than choosing by crane name alone. The following questions help narrow the options, but they are not a selection formula and do not replace a load chart or project-specific lift planning.
- Movement: Does the equipment need to move around the work area, travel between sites, remain in one position, or move along a runway?
- Support and conditions: Is the crane working on prepared ground, tracks, a road, fixed rails or runway, or water? Confirm that site conditions are suitable for the particular crane.
- Configuration: Would the work call for a boom, jib, bridge, or tower arrangement?
- Lift requirements: What load and reach are required at the relevant positions? Use current manufacturer information for the specific crane and configuration; do not infer these values from the family name.
- Setup: How much space is available for assembly, disassembly, positioning, and operation?
- People and rules: What operator, rigging, planning, and regulatory requirements apply to the equipment and work?
OSHA identifies crane types and safety obligations but does not provide a cross-model performance table. A responsible comparison therefore uses the selected machine’s current documentation and the actual project conditions, not generic capacity or reach ranges.

Safety and planning considerations
Crane selection is only one part of a safe lift. OSHA’s construction requirements and FAQ address ground conditions, assembly and disassembly procedures, power-line clearance, tower-crane pre-erection inspections, and synthetic slings used during tower-crane climbing and other assembly activities. These are reminders to consult the applicable regulation, the manufacturer’s instructions, and qualified lift personnel—not instructions for carrying out a lift.
OSHA states the scope of the construction standard this way: “This standard applies to power-operated equipment, when used in construction, that can hoist, lower and horizontally move a suspended load.” See 29 CFR 1926.1400 for the regulatory text. For related construction-crane safety topics, consult OSHA’s construction crane FAQ. Equipment design and testing requirements can vary with equipment type and manufacture date; the applicable rules and documentation should be checked for the specific machine.
