Never mix bleach and ammonia—or either one with another toilet cleaner. Bleach and ammonia can produce poisonous chloramine gas; bleach and an acid-containing bowl cleaner can produce chlorine gas. If you are choosing between products, use just one according to its label. The evidence cited here does not establish that bleach or ammonia is generally better for cleaning a toilet.
Why bleach and ammonia should never be combined
Household bleach commonly contains sodium hypochlorite. When bleach and ammonia are combined, they can form poisonous chloramine gas, which can irritate the respiratory system. High exposure or existing lung disease can make the effects severe. The CDC’s ammonia guidance also warns that ammonia can release gas when mixed with certain cleaning products and advises against mixing household cleaners.
Do not treat a small amount, an open window, or a lack of strong odor as proof that a mixture is safe. Avoid combining products, even if you think one has been rinsed away.
Toilet bowl cleaner can create a different gas hazard
Toilet bowl cleaners do not all have the same formula. If a cleaner contains ammonia, adding bleach can form chloramine gas. If it contains an acid, bleach can form chlorine gas. Poison Control advises against combining bleach with toilet bowl cleaner or urine; see its guidance on mixing bleach with other cleaners.

Do not assume a bowl cleaner is compatible with bleach based on its name or intended use. An EPA-hosted label for Lysol Brand Toilet Bowl Cleaner with Bleach, dated September 29, 2021, warns against mixing that product with other chemicals, including ammonia and acids. That is a warning for the labeled product, not a claim that all toilet cleaners have the same ingredients. Read the label on the product you have.
Which should you use to clean a toilet?
The available sources address chemical safety, not comparative cleaning results. They do not establish that bleach or ammonia cleans a toilet better, disinfects more effectively under matched conditions, or is more compatible with every toilet surface. Choose a product whose label permits the task, then use it exactly as directed.

- Use only one cleaner at a time; do not layer products in the bowl.
- Read and follow the product’s safety and use instructions. The CDC’s bleach guidance says: “Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner.”
- If you want to switch products, follow the labels and do not combine them. Do not assume rinsing makes an unknown mixture safe.
What to do if you accidentally mix cleaners or notice fumes
- Leave the area immediately. Do not stay to finish cleaning or investigate the mixture.
- Get to fresh air. Poison Control advises moving to fresh air after inhaling chlorine gas. The CDC gives similar advice for chemical inhalation exposure in its chemical emergency guidance.
- Get expert help. In the United States, contact Poison Control through webPOISONCONTROL or call 1-800-222-1222 for case-specific guidance. For severe symptoms or immediate danger, call emergency services and follow local authorities’ instructions.
Do not try to neutralize the mixture yourself. The cited safety guidance supports leaving the area and seeking expert advice, not a home procedure for treating an unknown mixture.
