The best-documented flower in this story is the giant waterlily Victoria amazonica, whose genus was named in honor of Queen Victoria. Its naming became part of a nineteenth-century public spectacle as botanists and horticulturists worked to grow the enormous Amazonian plant in Britain. The evidence supports this history in depth, but not a verified list of multiple flowers named for historical women.
A royal name—and two different botanical names
Botanist John Lindley established the genus Victoria in honor of Queen Victoria, according to Kew’s account of the plant’s history. The distinction between genus and species matters: Victoria is the genus, while Victoria amazonica is the current species name.
The naming history also includes an earlier species name. The Missouri Botanical Garden says Lindley described Victoria regia in the queen’s honor and that the current nomenclature, Victoria amazonica, became official in the early twentieth century. Kew’s profile likewise describes Victoria amazonica as the giant waterlily’s name. These accounts refer to different points in the plant’s naming history, not to two separate flowers.
How the waterlily became a public sensation
The plant’s name was attached to a remarkable effort to bring it into cultivation in Britain. Kew recounts attempts to transport seeds to England and the eventual flowering of a plant at Chatsworth in 1849; the first flower was presented to Queen Victoria. The story drew press attention and public fascination, linking botanical exploration, royal recognition, and horticultural spectacle.

The scale of the effort reflects the plant’s needs. This is a specialist aquatic species, not an ordinary garden flower. Kew says it germinates giant waterlily seeds in warm water under grow lamps in its Tropical Nursery.
Where Victoria amazonica grows
Kew gives the plant’s native range as Bolivia, northern and west-central Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, and Peru. It grows in freshwater lakes and backwaters of the Amazon basin. In cultivation, Kew lists the Waterlily House and the Princess of Wales Conservatory as places where visitors may see giant waterlilies. Displays and visitor access can change, so check Kew’s current visitor information before planning a visit.

Women’s contributions to botany are a separate history
Women have shaped botanical knowledge as authors and illustrators, but that contribution should not be confused with being the namesake of a flower. Kew’s account of women in botany discusses Elizabeth Blackwell’s botanical publishing and Marianne North’s botanical illustration. It does not establish that a flower was named after either woman.
That distinction is useful when considering claims about flowers named for remarkable women: a credible account should identify what taxonomic name was given, whom it honors, and who established the name. For the giant waterlily, the documented honor is at the genus level: Victoria commemorates Queen Victoria.

The genus is still being studied
The story of Victoria is not closed. Kew reports that Victoria boliviana was recognized as a species new to science, showing that botanical study continues to refine understanding of the genus. Kew horticulturist Carlos Magdalena said, “There are many aspects about the life history of Victoria which we haven’t answered, and our research provides the foundations for future studies focused on elucidating what is driving speciation in this remarkable plant genus.”
