- Identify the exact cleaner. Read its label and SDS rather than relying on the generic term “brake cleaner” or an assumption about chlorinated versus non-chlorinated formulas.
- Match the cleaner to the flux and materials. Check the flux type and compatibility with the PCB substrate, solder mask, connectors, and nearby plastics. A listed compatible plastic does not establish compatibility with every assembly material.
- Follow the product’s cleaning directions. Confirm whether the cleaner needs rinsing or another step; do not infer the procedure from a “fast-evaporating” or “residue-free” description.
- Account for flammability and handling. Follow label and SDS precautions for the exact product. The cited CRC Brakleen 50-State and ITW Micro-X NU pages both identify their products as highly or extremely flammable.
Can the can in your garage be used?
The available product information does not support recommending garage brake cleaner on a PCB.
