A tap extractor engages the flutes of a broken tap stuck in a threaded hole; a bolt or screw extractor engages a drilled hole in a broken fastener. They are different tools, and neither is a universal choice for both jobs. Choose by the failure, match the tool to the part, and follow its instructions for drilling and turning.
First identify what broke
- A tap broke: Use a dedicated tap extractor whose fingers fit the tapโs flutes. Walton Tools describes its design this way: โThe hardened steel fingers of these extraction tools fit in the flutes of a broken tap to back it out simply and safely.โ Walton Tools
- A bolt, stud, screw, or fitting broke: Use a screw or bolt extractor intended for that fastener, typically after drilling a pilot hole. An extractor set such as the spiral-flute IRWIN Hanson EX series is designed for broken studs, bolts, socket screws, and fittings. IRWIN Hanson catalog
The phrase โbest tap extractor for bolt recoveryโ combines two jobs. If the part in the hole is a bolt, a tap extractor is the wrong tool; if it is a broken tap, a conventional bolt extractor is not designed to engage its flutes.
Which extractor should you choose?

These are selection criteria, not a tested ranking. The available manufacturer specifications and instructions do not establish a universal winner, comparative success rate, or guarantee that a fastener will come free.
Choosing a tap extractor
Confirm the broken tapโs size, type, and number of flutes before ordering. Walton lists extractor coverage for machine and hand taps from #4 to 1 inch and 3 mm to 25 mm, pipe taps from 1/8 to 1 inch, and STI taps from #4 to 5/8 inch. Pay particular attention to flute style. Waltonโs ordering information says to specify the style and notes that parts are not interchangeable between flute styles. Do not assume an extractor that fits the nominal tap size will fit a different flute arrangement.
Choosing a bolt or screw extractor
For a broken fastener, compare the fastener range and extractor number, then check the pilot-drill size specified for that extractor. The IRWIN Hanson catalog lists spiral-flute EX-1 through EX-5 in a five-piece set and provides recommended pilot-drill sizes and fastener ranges. Check the current catalog and the selected kitโs packaging for the exact sizes and contents; do not infer a drill size from a generic rule. IRWIN Hanson catalog

Also consider whether the broken fastener is accessible enough to center a hole and whether the material can be drilled with the tools and setup you have. A left-hand drill bit may be useful in some workflows, but it must suit the material and comply with the selected extractorโs pilot-hole instructions.
Use the extractor according to its instructions
Instructions vary by product. For example, BLACK+DECKER says to use the pilot-hole drill size listed on the extractor package, insert the extractor, and turn it left. Bordoโs guidance recommends centering with a center punch, choosing a drill suited to the material, considering a left-hand drill with the drill set to reverse, and turning anti-clockwise with a tap wrench or spanner. - Wear eye protection; Bordo also advises hearing protection.
- Keep the drill and extractor aligned with the fastener, and avoid excessive lateral load.
- Use the specified pilot-hole size and turning method for the extractor in hand. A generic drill-size formula may damage the workpiece or make extraction harder.
When a broken tap needs specialist tooling
If a broken tap is difficult to remove by hand, a specialist carbide-tooling procedure may be an option. Travers Tool describes Omegadrill carbide tooling for spiral-flute, straight-flute, and forming taps. Its procedure calls for eye protection, clearing fragments, clamping the workpiece, and using a drill press or milling machine.
