Then decide whether you want a prewound replacement or compatible refill line.
How to find the right replacement spool
- Identify the trimmer’s exact model. Find the model number on the tool’s label and consult its manual or the manufacturer’s official parts diagram. Those documents can identify the spool part number, line gauge, and head assembly; see BLACK+DECKER’s manuals and parts resources for one manufacturer’s lookup route.
- Confirm the head and spool part number. A brand name alone does not establish compatibility. Match the replacement to the specific head design and part number shown for your model.
- Check the permitted line specification. Match both diameter and shape to the manual. Do not assume that line which fits physically is approved for the motor or head.
- Check what is included. Confirm whether the listing is for a prewound spool, refill line, or a spool assembly with cap or retainer. Verify any cap or retainer part number against the parts diagram.
Why line size and shape matter
Specifications differ by model. For the trimmer covered by its cited manual, Toro specifies 2 mm (0.080 inch) monofilament and warns that larger-diameter line can overheat and fail the motor. The BLACK+DECKER GH900 manual result hosted by ManualsLib specifies AF-100 or 0.065-inch (1.65 mm) round nylon monofilament and cautions against larger or differently shaped line. These are model-specific examples, not interchangeable or universal recommendations. Because the GH900 document is hosted by a secondary manual site, confirm the specification in the official manual for your tool.
Read your own manual before selecting line. Diameter and shape can affect whether the head feeds correctly and whether the line is suitable for the trimmer.
Prewound spool or refill line?
Prewound replacement
A prewound spool is a straightforward option when the manufacturer specifies that exact replacement part for your model. For example, BLACK+DECKER’s AF-100 is a single-line automatic-feed replacement spool; choose it only if your model documentation specifies AF-100. BLACK+DECKER’s explanation of its AFS system describes how the feed works, but does not establish AF-100 compatibility with every trimmer.

Refill line
Refill line may be an option when the head is designed to be rewound. Use the material, shape, and diameter permitted by the manual, and follow instructions for the specific head. STIHL notes in its official service guide that different mowing heads, lines, and spools suit different applications, and provides winding directions for named heads. A refillable head is not the same thing as a spool that can be refilled universally.
What automatic feed means—and what it does not
BLACK+DECKER describes its Automatic Feed Spool (AFS) as using centrifugal force to monitor line use and feed more line as the cutting line shortens, without requiring the user to bump the head or press a feed button. That describes the operation of that system; an “automatic feed” label by itself does not prove that a spool fits your trimmer. Confirm the model and spool part number first.

Once you have the part number and line specification from your manual, compare listings on the details that determine whether they are suitable:
- Exact fit: listed compatibility matches your complete trimmer model, head, or specified spool part number.
- Line specification: diameter and shape match the manual.
- Feed and head type: the spool is intended for the head and feed system on your tool.
- Format: prewound replacement or refill line for a head that supports winding.
- Included hardware: cap or retainer is included only if needed, and its fit is verified in the parts diagram.
- Current listing details: check the seller’s current compatibility information, contents, price, and stock before ordering.

Change a spool safely
Disconnect or remove the power source as directed in your trimmer’s manual before opening the head or changing a spool. The exact steps vary by model, so follow the instructions for your tool rather than assuming that one model’s removal or winding procedure applies to another.
