No—Tapo did not replace Kasa. When TP-Link launched Tapo in the United States in May 2022, a company spokesperson said the two lines would coexist and serve different consumer needs. TP-Link later described them as distinct, independent brands, even as it added support for many Kasa devices in the Tapo app.
What TP-Link said when Tapo launched
In its May 16, 2022 coverage of Tapo’s U.S. launch, BetaNews quoted an unnamed TP-Link spokesperson: “It does not replace Kasa going forward, the two lines will co-exist together and offer different products depending on the needs of the consumer.” The launch-era Tapo range described in that article included indoor and outdoor cameras, smart outlet adapters, and RGB light strips; those examples do not establish what is available today.
TP-Link’s 2022 product guide framed the distinction as positioning: it said Kasa targeted mainstream and high-end consumers, while Tapo was a new independent brand intended to make smart-home products affordable. That is the company’s historical description, not a guarantee that every current Tapo product costs less or that the product lines still divide neatly by price.
How the two brands relate now
On January 9, 2024, TP-Link said that “Kasa Smart and Tapo remain distinct and independent brands” while announcing Kasa-device integration in Tapo App 3.0. The change lets users manage supported devices from one app; it did not merge the brands or end the Kasa app. TP-Link said Kasa devices could continue to be managed in Kasa, too.

TP-Link’s 2023 figures provide context for the separate apps, but not a measure of current customers: the company reported more than 13 million Tapo app users and more than 10 million Kasa Smart app users worldwide that year. These are company-reported app-user counts, not audited customer totals or active-user figures.
What Kasa owners can do in the Tapo app
TP-Link’s current support guidance says most Kasa devices can be linked to Tapo. It names the Kasa KE100 and KE110 as exceptions. Supported synchronized items can include devices, groups, smart actions, scenes, timers, away mode, and schedules. Compatibility is model-specific, so check the support information for your exact device rather than assuming every Kasa product works in Tapo.

- Sign in to both the Tapo and Kasa apps with the same TP-Link ID.
- In the Tapo app, open Me > Link Tapo with Kasa and follow the prompts.
- After linking, look for Kasa devices under All Devices. Assign them to rooms manually if you want them organized by room.
Linking adds supported Kasa devices to Tapo; it does not transfer every Kasa feature or account entitlement.
What app linking does not transfer
- Care subscriptions stay separate. Kasa Care and Tapo Care are independent services.
- Kasa cloud video history does not move to Tapo. TP-Link says that history cannot be transferred or viewed in the Tapo app.
- Room assignments may need attention. Linked Kasa devices appear in All Devices and require manual room assignment.
For a camera or other feature-dependent product, verify the exact model’s app support and cloud features before relying on the integration.

Choosing between Tapo and Kasa products
The brand relationship alone does not establish that one line is better, more capable, or compatible with a particular smart-home setup. Compare the specific products you are considering, including their model and region, supported app, smart-home standards and voice-assistant support, camera storage and subscription options, energy-monitoring or automation features, and current price and availability. The 2022 launch positioning is useful historical context, but it is not a substitute for a current model-by-model comparison.
