They are not interchangeable: only the 100-watt products are starter kits for building a battery-based setup, and neither includes the battery needed to store power. The right affordable option depends on whether you want to maintain a parked vehicle battery, charge personal electronics, or build a small RV or shed system.

The 9W foldable panel, Item 57970, is a smaller, lower-output USB alternative to the 18W model. Harbor Freight’s current product listing is available here; a 2024 price is not established.
What makes a solar option affordable?
The lowest purchase price is only one measure. A small maintainer can be the cheapest choice for a parked car but cannot supply household power. A 100W kit costs more and provides more generation capacity, yet a usable system may also need a battery, an inverter for AC devices, fuses, wiring and mounting. Compare what is included with what your intended load actually requires.

1. THUNDERBOLT SOLAR 100W Amorphous Kit: flexible panel placement
The 100W amorphous kit (Items 63585/64335) is a true panel kit rather than a single bare panel. Harbor Freight lists four 25W panels, connection braces, mounting hardware, a 10A charge controller, two LED bulbs, a DC connector cable, a battery-clamp cable and a four-in-one connection cable. Its listed weight is about 33.4 pounds. The product page says a 12V storage battery and 300W inverter are sold separately: see the kit details.
Who should consider it
Four separate panels can be useful when one large panel is awkward to position or transport, and the included controller and lights help with a basic 12V project. Harbor Freight promotes the amorphous panels for bright and cloudy conditions, but that is manufacturer language—not a guarantee of a particular output in overcast weather.
What it will not do on its own
The kit does not store electricity or provide plug-and-play household AC. Add a compatible 12V battery for use when sunlight is unavailable; add an appropriately sized inverter only if you need AC output. The specified 300W inverter is not a promise that the system can run a 300W load indefinitely: runtime depends on battery capacity and recharge conditions. Harbor Freight’s 2024 coupon records show $149.99 promotions in April and October, while later clearance status and availability can change.

2. THUNDERBOLT SOLAR 100W Monocrystalline Kit: a more compact starter setup
Item 70735 combines one 100W monocrystalline panel with a 10A PWM charge controller, two 12V LED bulbs, an 8-foot 14-AWG battery cable, a 10-foot Anderson-style-to-tinned-leads cable, battery clamps, a universal DC adapter and four Z-shaped mounting brackets. It also has pre-drilled mounting holes and kickstand-style legs. Harbor Freight’s listing is here.
Who should consider it
Choose this format when one panel is easier to mount on an RV, camper or shed than four separate panels. Monocrystalline panels generally provide more power in a given panel area than amorphous designs, so a single-panel format can be convenient where space is limited.
Output expectations and price context
Harbor Freight advertises up to 500 watt-hours per day in full sun. Treat that as a favorable-condition ceiling, not a daily guarantee: season, panel angle, shade, heat, wiring and controller losses all affect production. The July 2024 coupon at $99.99 applied to a 100W monocrystalline panel, not necessarily the 70735 kit; the available evidence does not establish a 2024 price for the complete kit.

3. THUNDERBOLT SOLAR 25W Panel: slow 12V battery charging
Item 63940 is a standalone 25W panel, not a complete battery-backed system. Harbor Freight lists a cigarette-lighter adapter, battery-terminal clamps and a bare-wire pigtail, and describes it for 12V RV or marine battery applications. Its listed output is 1A. See the product specifications.
This panel makes sense when you need modest charging or maintenance and already have compatible charging regulation. It is not the right choice for fast charging a large battery or running substantial loads. Confirm that the connection method and charge regulation are appropriate for your battery; do not assume every adapter makes direct connection safe for every battery type.
4. THUNDERBOLT SOLAR 7W Kit: battery maintenance on a budget
Item 64801 is built for maintaining batteries in stored vehicles, RVs and marine applications, rather than producing general-purpose power. The kit includes an auto-lighter adapter, DC battery adapter, USB adapter and mounting hardware, plus a built-in blocking diode. Harbor Freight specifies 18V and 480mA; its product page describes the intended battery-maintainer use.

It was advertised to Inside Track Club members for $26.99 through October 31, 2024, according to the promotion record. That makes it a low-cost fit when the job is keeping a compatible battery topped up while a vehicle sits. Seven watts is not enough to recharge a large battery quickly or serve as a household power source.

Item 57968 is a foldable personal-electronics charger, not a 12V battery-system kit. It has four monocrystalline sections, two USB outlets rated up to 3A, a locking kickstand and folds to about 9.6 by 7.5 by 1.2 inches. Harbor Freight’s listing gives typical smartphone charging estimates of 2.5–5 hours and large-tablet estimates of 4–10 hours; actual times vary with sunlight, device, cable and usage.
It is the better fit of the two foldable models when USB charging output matters, but its USB format does not replace a regulated 12V battery charger. The 9W foldable alternative has two USB outlets with up to 1.5A output and is smaller and lower-output. Neither is suited to AC appliances.

Panel, controller, battery and inverter: what a usable system needs
- Panel: converts sunlight to electricity; output varies with illumination and conditions.
- Charge controller: regulates charging from a panel into a battery. Use the supplied controller or one compatible with panel voltage and battery chemistry.
- Battery: stores energy for night, shade or intermittent use. None of the five selections includes a battery.
- Inverter: converts battery DC into household AC. The amorphous kit specifically requires a separately purchased 300W inverter for AC use; the monocrystalline kit’s included list does not make it a battery-backed AC power station.
- Load: the device drawing power. Its wattage, startup surge and operating time determine what battery and inverter are needed.
A phone, LED lights or a small fan can be realistic loads with a correctly configured battery system. A laptop may work with a suitable battery and inverter. A refrigerator typically calls for substantially more storage and surge capability; a space heater is a poor match for a small solar kit because it consumes considerable power.
How to choose the right Harbor Freight option
- Identify the load. Decide whether you are maintaining a vehicle battery, charging USB devices, or powering 12V or AC equipment.
- Match the output type. The 18W and 9W foldable panels are USB chargers; the 7W kit is a battery maintainer; the 25W panel and 100W kits are oriented toward 12V battery projects.
- Check the included controller and battery requirements. Do not connect a panel to a battery unless the product is designed for that use and has suitable regulation.
- Account for storage and conversion. Add a battery for power after sunset and an inverter only if the load needs AC.
- Plan the installation. Consider panel area, cable length, connector compatibility, mounting, shade and weather protection.
- Verify the actual deal and stock. Historical coupons establish past prices, not current prices; check local inventory and coupon eligibility before buying.
Which one should you choose?
- Best compact 100W starter kit: the 100W monocrystalline kit for a one-panel RV, shed or small off-grid installation.
- Best multi-panel flexibility: the 100W amorphous kit when its 2024 promotional pricing and included accessories suited the project.
- Best vehicle battery maintainer: the 7W kit for a compatible battery that needs maintenance rather than rapid charging.
- Best low-power 12V panel: the 25W panel for slow charging when compatible regulation is already in place.
- Best portable phone and tablet charging: the 18W foldable panel for USB devices; choose the 9W model if lower output and a smaller, cheaper option matter more.
