To personalize Alexa for several people, first decide whether everyone will use one Amazon account or whether adults need separate accounts. Add Alexa Profiles for a shared-account household; use Amazon Family (still labeled Amazon Household in some places) to connect adults’ separate accounts. Then enroll Voice ID where available and test which account the Echo is using. You usually do not need to deregister and reset every Echo to add household members.

Choose profiles or separate Amazon accounts

An Alexa Profile is a person-specific profile associated with the Amazon account used to register the Echo. Profiles and Voice ID can personalize some responses, but they do not create independent Amazon logins or fully separate account-linked purchases, services, smart-home ownership, or content. Amazon’s Echo setup guidance describes adding profiles and setting up devices.

Amazon Family, formerly called Amazon Household, links eligible accounts. Adults keep separate Amazon accounts and can switch accounts on supported Echo devices. Amazon says setup is free and one adult Prime membership can provide shared Prime benefits; eligibility and benefits can vary by country and change. Older documentation or app screens may still say “Amazon Household.” See Amazon’s explanation of Amazon Family.

Household need Starting setup Trade-off
One account manages the household Alexa Profiles and Voice ID Less separation for account-linked services and activity
Adults already have separate Amazon accounts Amazon Family and account switching Requires linking accounts; some features may still need configuration per account
Children use the Echo Child profile or account with Amazon Kids controls Parents must review permissions and content; controls vary by feature and region
One adult wants a device to behave as a personal Echo Register that Echo to the adult’s own account Household routines, smart-home links, subscriptions, or shared content may not carry over automatically

Set up the first Echo

Have the Echo, Wi-Fi details, the intended primary Amazon account, and a current Alexa app on an iOS or Android phone ready. For an Echo without a screen, the app is the main setup route; screen-based models may show setup instructions on the device.

Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
  • Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

  3. Follow the app’s prompts to find the Echo, connect it to Wi-Fi, and complete registration.
  4. Give the Echo a clear device name and assign it to the correct room or group when prompted. Use distinct names for devices in different rooms.

Amazon’s setup overview is available at Setting up Echo.

Add Alexa Profiles under one account

Use this route when one Amazon account will remain responsible for the Echo household. In the Alexa app, open More → Settings → Your Profile & Family → Add someone else. Select or create the person’s profile, enter or confirm their name, and follow the prompts. Amazon documents this path, but menu wording can vary with app version and location.

A profile is not a separate Amazon login. If an adult needs a distinct shopping account or account-linked media and services, use Amazon Family instead of making a second profile under the primary account.

Enroll Voice ID and test it

Voice ID can help Alexa recognize a speaker and personalize supported interactions. Availability and behavior depend on the device, account, language, country, and software version; it is a personalization feature, not secure authentication or a guarantee that every service will switch accounts correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the Alexa app, select the person’s profile or choose the option indicating that you are someone else, if shown.
  2. Confirm the person’s name and follow Alexa’s spoken enrollment prompts in a quiet room.
  3. If enrollment is offered in a separate menu, look under More → Settings → Family or Amazon Family, select the person, and choose Voice ID.
  4. Repeat for each person who wants a Voice ID. Amazon also documents enrollment through the app and Echo prompts in its Voice ID instructions.

Test with “Alexa, which account is this?” where account switching is supported, then try a personalized request such as “Alexa, play my music.” If the response uses the wrong account, say “Alexa, switch accounts” for linked Amazon Family accounts and test again.

Connect adults’ separate accounts with Amazon Family

Choose this route when adults already use separate Amazon accounts and want to retain separate account histories while sharing eligible benefits. Create or manage Amazon Family through Amazon’s household-management controls in the Amazon app or on the web, invite the other adult, and complete the linking prompts. Amazon describes limits of up to two adults, four teens ages 13–17, and four children; rules and availability may differ by country.

Amazon Echo Dot (newest model) - Vibrant sounding speaker, Designed for Alexa+, Great for bedrooms, dining rooms and offices, Glacier White
  • Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
  • Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.

  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Keep the Echo registered to the primary account unless there is a specific reason to transfer it. On supported devices, linked adults can switch accounts by saying “Alexa, switch accounts” and check the active account with “Alexa, which account is this?” Amazon documents these commands for Amazon Family. Voice ID may improve personalization, but should not be treated as a dependable way to change every linked service automatically. See Amazon Family account and sharing details.

Configure profiles for children

Add a child through the family-management controls or create a child profile where available, then review Amazon Kids settings. Amazon Kids controls are separate from simply adding a profile, and the available settings depend on account, device, and region. Amazon’s guidance says children’s Voice ID can be configured through Alexa app Amazon Kids controls where supported.

  • Choose age-appropriate content and review what the Echo can access.
  • Consider disabling voice purchasing or requiring a confirmation code.
  • Review calling, messaging, Drop In, announcements, and other communication permissions.
  • Test the child’s access from the rooms where the Echo will be used.

Parents remain responsible for reviewing content and permissions; automated age groupings are not a substitute for parental judgment. See Amazon’s profile and Visual ID guidance and Amazon’s advice for parents using Alexa with children.

  • Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
  • Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.

Manage several Echo devices in one home

Register each Echo to the intended account, give it a unique name, and assign it to the correct room or smart-home group in the Alexa app. Household features such as Announcements, Drop In, and multi-room audio are available only on supported devices and configurations, and may depend on permissions or services.

Not everyone needs the Alexa app just to speak to an Echo. However, device registration, routines, skills, linked services, and some account-specific settings may require access to the account that owns or manages them. A person’s ability to use a voice command does not necessarily give them equivalent app-level control of smart-home devices. Amazon’s guidance on sharing Alexa app access is at Alexa app sharing and permissions.

Review privacy and purchasing before sharing

A shared Echo can surface information associated with linked accounts. Amazon notes that notifications and household sharing can include activity such as calls, messages, lists, and other account-linked information; members may need to turn off notifications individually. Before placing an Echo in a shared room, review shopping and delivery notifications, reminders, calling and messaging, Drop In, Announcements, calendars, shared lists, and photos on Echo Show devices.

For voice purchasing, open More → Settings → Account Settings → Voice Purchasing where that path is available. Require a confirmation code or disable voice purchasing, particularly on devices children can use. Do not rely on Voice ID alone to prevent purchases. Amazon Photos and visual features on Echo Show devices may also expose content depending on account and settings, so consider room placement as well as app permissions. Amazon’s Amazon Family guidance discusses shared account features and notifications.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Alexa does not recognize someone

  1. Confirm the person has the intended Alexa Profile or is correctly linked through Amazon Family.
  2. Enroll or repeat Voice ID for the correct profile in a quiet room.
  3. Ask which account is active; switch accounts manually if needed.
  4. Update the Alexa app and Echo software, then restart the Echo and phone.
  5. Remove and recreate a profile only if the simpler checks fail.

The wrong person’s music plays

Check the active account, whether Voice ID is enrolled, and whether the music provider is linked to the account Alexa is using. A provider’s subscription or simultaneous-streaming rules can also affect playback, and not every service offers separate histories or recommendations through Alexa. Switch accounts, review music-service linking in the app, and re-enroll Voice ID if needed. If strict separation matters, consider Amazon Family or an Echo registered to the individual’s own account.

“Add someone else” is missing

Check More → Settings → Your Profile & Family, then look for labels such as Family, Amazon Family, or Amazon Household. Update the app and confirm you are signed into the account that manages the Echo. Separate adult accounts should be connected through Amazon Family controls rather than added as duplicate profiles. Labels and feature availability may differ by region.

A household member cannot manage smart-home devices

First identify which Amazon account owns the smart-home setup. The person may need an invitation in the device manufacturer’s app or appropriate sharing permissions; Alexa Profile membership alone does not guarantee identical app-level ownership. Avoid deregistering the Echo unless the goal is to transfer the device and its management.

You need to remove a person

Removing an Alexa Profile, removing an adult from Amazon Family, removing a child account, deregistering an Echo, and unlinking a third-party service are different actions. Choose the action that matches what you want to change. Leaving Amazon Family can affect shared Prime benefits and Family Library access; Amazon says a person who leaves cannot join another Amazon Household for 180 days, subject to regional rules and current policy. Check Amazon’s current Amazon Family terms before removing an adult.

Alexa+ and household profiles

In 2026 guidance, Amazon recommends creating profiles for household members and adding adult members who live at the same address to Amazon Family after upgrading to Alexa+. Voice ID and Visual ID on supported Echo Show models may personalize interactions. Alexa+ availability, eligibility, and device support vary; do not assume its features work identically to standard Alexa or are available in every country. Amazon’s guidance is at Alexa+ household setup.
