In Ben Schoon’s 2023 installation, the panel helped his camera’s charge recover, though his results are personal observations—not a guaranteed charge rate.
What the Wasserstein panel does—and which Nest Cam it fits
The Google-listed Wasserstein panel is a 2.5W accessory for the Nest Cam (outdoor or indoor, battery). It connects through the camera’s magnetic pogo connector and, when there is sufficient direct sunlight, trickle-charges the camera’s built-in rechargeable battery. Google lists that battery as 6 Ah at 3.65V. Those specifications describe the camera battery and panel output; they do not establish how quickly a particular installation will charge.
The camera continues to operate from its battery rather than drawing power directly from the panel. That distinction matters on a construction site or around a building: this is a way to extend time between manual charges, not a conversion to a permanently wired camera. Do not assume fit for an older wired Nest Cam or a newer camera generation with a different connector unless the current accessory listing confirms compatibility for that exact model. Google’s listing describes the compatible battery-camera model and panel.
How fast does it charge?
There is no established typical charge rate in the available product information. The useful figures are one reviewer’s results under his own sunlight, camera activity, and weather—not a controlled comparison or a promise for another site.

All three observations are from Ben Schoon’s May 2023 review. Sun exposure, activity, orientation, shading, and weather vary from one installation to another, so the figures should not be used as a schedule for when another camera will reach a target charge.
Choosing between the 2.5W and 3.5W versions
The reviewer found the 3.5W version useful in a position with weaker sunlight or more camera activity, but his experience does not prove that it will outperform the 2.5W model by a fixed amount in every installation. Choose based on the mounting location and how much recovery time you can tolerate.

Check current price, stock, and exact-model compatibility before buying. The comparison is between separately reported observations, not a controlled test performed under identical conditions. If the panel’s location receives dependable direct sunlight and the camera is not frequently triggered, the lower-output option may suit a battery-maintenance goal. Where sunlight is limited or activity is higher, the 3.5W version is the more plausible choice if the current listing confirms it fits your camera.
Mounting and cable reach
Schoon mounted the panel to a wooden garden post with the included two screws and described the installation as taking a couple of minutes. He said the mount lets the panel rotate 360 degrees parallel to its mount and tilt on another axis, which can help aim it toward direct sun. His reviewed unit had a built-in 13-foot cable that could not be replaced or shortened. Confirm the cable length and included hardware on the listing for the version you plan to buy, since product configurations may change.

He also described a gutter mount that carries the camera and panel together without drilling, and a universal pole mount. Those are installation options he discussed, not proof that every mount will fit every surface or camera generation. Google says a compatible third-party camera mount can use a 1/4-inch-20 thread, but notes that using one may affect camera performance. Verify fit and stability for the exact camera and mounting location.
Weather, temperature, and construction-site considerations
Schoon reported that his panel survived two intense thunderstorms and needed only a quick wipe to remove dirt. That is one owner’s experience, not independent weatherproofing or durability testing. The camera itself is listed with IP54 weather resistance; that rating is a camera specification and should not be treated as a panel rating.

Temperature can undermine the charging plan even when the camera remains operational. Google’s product guidance says the camera works between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), but its battery drains because it cannot charge below freezing; if the battery empties, the camera shuts down. In cold weather, plan for battery depletion rather than assuming sunlight will replenish it.

No. The panel trickle-charges the battery, and the camera runs from that battery. Schoon specifically cautioned that solar use does not provide true 24/7 continuous recording. His camera also showed improved live-view access and a more stable Wi-Fi connection after he added the panel, but that was in his setup about 150 feet from the nearest Wi-Fi point with a metal building in the way; it is not evidence that the panel improves Wi-Fi generally.

If you need continuous power rather than fewer battery recharges, Google documents an optional weatherproof cable in 16 ft (5 m) and 33 ft (10 m) lengths that allows the camera to remain plugged in outdoors. Check the cable’s compatibility with your exact camera and whether its length suits the route to a protected power source. Google distinguishes accessories made by Google from partner products certified as “Made for Google”; confirm the status of a specific accessory in its current listing.
Is Wasserstein’s panel worth it?
It is a practical battery-maintenance option when the exact battery-powered Nest Cam model is compatible and the mounting spot receives useful direct sun. The reviewer’s figures show that charging can take days, and they do not establish a typical result. For a building owner who wants fewer manual charging visits, that trade-off may be worthwhile; for a camera that must stay powered continuously or record around the clock, use a compatible wired-power solution instead.
