Birmingham City’s proposed 62,000-seat Powerhouse stadium is the centrepiece of a planned £3bn Sports Quarter in east Birmingham—not a stadium whose construction cost has been confirmed at £3bn. The council’s 2026 prospectus targets completion by the 2030/31 football season, but that is a plan, not a confirmed opening date or evidence of planning approval.
What does the £3bn figure cover?
Birmingham City FC’s 2024/25 annual review describes the wider Sports Quarter as a £3bn project, with the new stadium at its centre. The Guardian has characterised the proposal as a 60-acre development. The £3bn figure is therefore the announced scale of the broader regeneration scheme; it should not be read as a confirmed construction cost for the stadium alone. Birmingham City FC’s annual review and The Guardian’s coverage describe the project in those terms.

Separately, the UK Government said on 5 February 2025 that Knighthead had invested £100m to build the Sports Quarter. That is a distinct government-reported investment figure, not the total cost of the development or a stadium-only budget. The Government announcement.
How large is the proposed stadium?
Birmingham City Council’s 2026 prospectus describes the Powerhouse as a 62,000-seat stadium. Earlier descriptions from the council, the club and the UK Government gave a 60,000-seat figure. The latest council figure is best understood as the current proposal, not a final approved capacity. Council prospectus.

- The Etihad stadium can be recreated in spectacular colours and detail in around 3-5 hours
- No need for scissors, tools or glue
- The puzzle contains 132 pieces
- Measures approximately 48cm x 39cm x 12.5cm
At either stated capacity, it would be a very large venue. The available figures do not establish a reliable England-wide ranking, so the proposal should not be presented as definitively one of the country’s biggest by a specific rank.
What else is planned for the Sports Quarter?
The project is conceived as a mixed-use sports and regeneration district, rather than a stadium in isolation. The council prospectus includes:
- A new stadium for Birmingham City and a separate women’s stadium.
- Training pitches and other sports facilities.
- Commercial and mixed-use areas, including retail, offices and business-incubation space.
The council also describes proposed transport connections, including a Metro extension and improvements to Adderley Park station. These are elements of the plan, not services or station upgrades confirmed as operational. The West Midlands Combined Authority has placed the proposal in the wider context of east Birmingham regeneration and a proposed regional development corporation process. WMCA project context.

Birmingham City Council’s 2026 prospectus gives completion by the 2030/31 football season as the target for the new stadium. These statements describe an intended submission and a target completion point; they do not establish that the application has been submitted, that planning permission has been granted, or that the stadium will open by that season. What is the projected local impact?
Birmingham City Council and the UK Government say the project is expected to create 8,400 jobs. This is a projected impact estimate for the development, not a count of jobs already created. The council also presents the Sports Quarter as part of a broader east Birmingham regeneration effort, linking sports facilities with commercial, retail and business uses.
