The official descriptions do not establish how many shipping containers were used or say that the whole station consists of unmodified freight containers.
What “built from shipping containers” means at Bharati
NCPOR describes Bharati as a modular project made up of smaller containerized modules. That supports calling it a modular station with containerized construction, but not the stronger claim that every part of the facility is a standard shipping container. NCPOR’s published descriptions do not give a container count or identify the architect or contractor.
The distinction matters: “containerized” describes a modular approach, while the available official information does not specify the precise type, number, or modification of the modules. NCPOR’s Bharati station overview and its construction and infrastructure description provide the project details.
Where the station is and when it opened
Bharati stands between Thala Fjord and Quilty Bay, east of the Stornes Peninsula, in East Antarctica. NCPOR gives its location as 69° 24.41′ S, 76° 11.72′ E, at approximately 35 metres above sea level. The station was commissioned on 18 March 2012 to support year-round scientific research by India’s Antarctic programme.

How quickly it was built, and how large it is
NCPOR reports that it planned, supervised, and provided operational support for construction using modular structures from 2007 through 2012. The station building was erected in 127 days. The main building measures 30 m × 50 m and has a reported floor area of 2,162 m². NCPOR does not state the year of publication for these figures.
How the building is arranged
The floor-area allocations NCPOR publishes show that the station is designed around more than accommodation and laboratories. Utilities and circulation together account for 66% of the stated area, reflecting the space needed to support and move through a remote, operationally complex facility.

Accommodation and research
The main building accommodates 47 people in twin-sharing arrangements in both summer and winter, according to NCPOR. It includes laboratories, living areas, dining and lounge spaces, cold storage, and a sauna. Emergency shelters or summer camps provide space for 25 additional people during summer, bringing the stated summer capacity to 72.

Power, heating, water, and communications
NCPOR says three combined heat and power units, each rated at 100 kVA, meet the station’s heat and power requirements. Supporting systems include an automatically operated fuel farm of approximately 300,000 litres, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and seawater and wastewater systems. The building also has regulated power, hot and cold running water, flush toilets, and a public-address system. Dedicated satellite channels provide voice, video, and data connectivity with mainland India.

NCPOR, an institution under India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, manages and maintains Bharati and India’s other Antarctic station, Maitri, as part of its polar research and operations role. NCPOR’s separate 2024 competition concerned redeveloping Maitri, not Bharati; it should not be read as a Bharati redesign project.
