The best whole-house humidity control depends on whether your home is persistently too damp or too dry. Measure relative humidity (RH) first, then address moisture sources and choose compatible equipment only if the problem affects multiple rooms. For most homes, aim for 30%–50% RH; lower humidification if condensation appears on windows or walls.
Measure humidity before choosing a control
A digital hygrometer measures indoor RH; it does not control it. EPA recommends using a humidity indicator, and ENERGY STAR suggests a separate hygrometer if a dehumidifier does not display humidity. Take readings in representative parts of the house and compare them over time rather than buying equipment based on one room or a single moment.
EPA advises keeping home humidity below 60%, ideally 30%–50%. ENERGY STAR also describes 30%–50% as the general optimum and recommends 30%–40% during the heating season in cold climates to help prevent window condensation. These are general ranges, not a reason to pursue a fixed reading when the building shows signs of moisture trouble.
Choose the control that matches the problem
| What you find | Starting response | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Humidity has not been measured, or readings vary by room | Use a digital hygrometer or RH monitor | Measure representative areas over time before selecting equipment. |
| RH is persistently elevated in multiple rooms | Check moisture sources and ventilation; consider whole-home dehumidification if the home is a suitable fit | ENERGY STAR cites consistently above 55% throughout a relatively well-sealed home with central air as an example. Plan for professional sizing, installation, and condensate drainage. |
| The whole home is persistently dry during heating season | Check RH and condensation risk; consider central humidification only if appropriate | Verify HVAC compatibility, controls, water and maintenance requirements, and the condition of the building envelope. |
| Condensation appears on cold windows or walls | Lower humidifier output or the humidistat setting, then investigate moisture and cold surfaces | Condensation can indicate excessive humidity or a cold surface; prolonged moisture can damage walls. |
| The issue is limited to one room | Address the source and room ventilation first | A room-level solution may be more appropriate than whole-house equipment. |
When whole-house dehumidification makes sense
A whole-home dehumidifier may suit a relatively well-sealed home with central air when RH remains above 55% throughout the house. That figure is ENERGY STAR’s example for considering the option, not a universal trigger. The choice still depends on the home’s moisture sources, climate, construction, and HVAC arrangement.

Most whole-home dehumidifiers require a drain, and ENERGY STAR recommends professional sizing and installation. When comparing compatible equipment, look for ENERGY STAR certification and compare capacity, integrated energy factor, drainage needs, ducting requirements, and maintenance. ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units; a higher integrated energy factor means more moisture removed per unit of energy.
When central humidification is appropriate
Central humidification is worth considering only when dryness is persistent across the home and the HVAC system can support the equipment. A humidistat or other humidity-responsive control can cycle compatible equipment toward a selected RH, but the control cannot compensate for poor installation, unsuitable ductwork, or moisture problems in the building.

EPA advises not humidifying above 50% RH. If water condenses on windows, walls, or pictures, lower the humidistat or reduce use. In cold climates, ENERGY STAR’s 30%–40% heating-season range can help reduce window condensation. Follow the specific equipment manufacturer’s instructions for operation, cleaning, and replacement parts.

- Efficiency and upkeep: Check applicable efficiency certification, cleaning schedules, and replacement materials, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
EPA Indoor airPLUS describes integrated RH monitoring or a standalone digital hygrometer, as well as humidity-feedback HVAC dehumidification controls. Its cited Version 2 document is a February 2023 draft specification, not a universal operating standard. It advises 40%–60% RH during most times of year and limits ducted humidification to 40%, with a lower maximum if condensation occurs; those certification advisories have a different scope from EPA’s consumer advice not to humidify above 50% and ENERGY STAR’s general 30%–50% range.

Equipment is not a substitute for managing moisture entering or accumulating in the home. EPA’s moisture-control guidance, last updated February 18, 2026, recommends exhausting kitchen and bathroom air outdoors, venting clothes dryers outdoors, and using dehumidification or air conditioning where appropriate in hot, humid climates. A tight home can retain moisture, while climate and construction affect which measures work.

- BUY WITH CONFIDENCE This high output steam humidifier was designed with electrode technology and manufactured in the U. S. A. by Aprilaire – the inventor of the whole home evaporative humidifier, and the leader in indoor air quality solutions
- FULL COVERAGE up to 10,300 square feet in tightly built homes. Choose from 6 levels of output adding 11. 5 to 34. 6 gallons of moisture into the air per day based on voltage and installation
- AUTOMATIC HUMIDIFIER with dual sensors to monitor and respond to both outdoor temperature and indoor relative humidity to deliver optimum humidity 24/7 throughout the home – simply set it and forget it
- PURIFIED WATER NOT REQUIRED Electrode technology requires impurities in the water to promote the transfer of electricity. Water filtration is not recommended – minimizing installation complexity and operating costs
- HUMIDITY FOR HEALTH Aprilaire Humidifiers can help you maintain optimal humidity in your home of 40% – 60% which has been shown to reduce the incidence of respiratory infections and symptoms related to allergies and asthma by minimizing the formation of bacteria and viruses, fungi, and dust mites. In addition, you’ll feel more comfortable while also preserving items in your home susceptible to damage from changing humidity or dry conditions
Persistent condensation deserves attention even if a humidity reading seems acceptable: cold surfaces can collect moisture, and prolonged dampness can damage walls. Reduce humidification and investigate both indoor moisture sources and the surface conditions rather than trying to maintain a high target RH.
