A recent Popular Mechanics roundup listed five options from $499 to $749, with capacities and features that suit different households. Treat those prices as a snapshot, then verify the exact model, current offer and installation costs before buying.
Which washers under $1,000 are worth comparing?
Popular Mechanics’ roundup, updated October 2, 2026, lists these top-load washers and retailer prices at Lowe’s at the time of its update. The prices are not guaranteed current offers, and the mined article details do not establish exact model numbers.

How should you choose between top-load and front-load?
Start with how you do laundry, rather than assuming one type is best for everyone. Whirlpool’s general guidance says top-load machines tend to have shorter cycle times, while front-load machines offer more flexible setup and use less water. These are manufacturer-level comparisons, not guarantees for every washer or cycle.

Top-load: consider access and cycle habits
A top-load lid can be convenient if you prefer loading from above or want to add a garment during a cycle, where the model allows it. Within top-loaders, an agitator moves clothes around a central post; an impeller uses a lower-profile wash plate. The candidates above include agitator models and a washer with a removable agitator, so compare the exact configuration, capacity and controls.
Front-load: consider placement and water use
A front-load door may suit a layout where stacking or a counter above the washer matters, but check the actual installation requirements and dimensions. Whirlpool describes front-load models as allowing more flexible setup and using less water; compare the specific washer’s efficiency information rather than treating that as a model-by-model result. Will the washer fit your laundry space and loads?
Measure both the installation area and the route into it. A washer that fits its allocated width may still be difficult to bring through a doorway, hallway or stairwell. ENERGY STAR recommends considering the washer’s location, width, drum capacity and whether you usually wash small or large loads.

- Measure the available width, height and depth, allowing for the installation clearances specified for the exact washer.
- Check the access path, including doorways and turns, and confirm delivery requirements with the retailer.
- Compare drum capacity with your usual load size. A larger capacity can be useful for bulky items or fewer, larger loads, but it is not automatically the best fit for a household that mostly washes small loads.
- Check door or lid clearance and any stacking or accessory requirements for the specific installation.

How can you compare energy and water costs?
Look beyond the purchase price if you expect to keep the washer for years. ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than regular washers. For full-size models, it reports 14 gallons per load for ENERGY STAR washers, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. These program-level comparisons are not a prediction of the savings for a particular household.
ENERGY STAR estimates qualifying models can save about $530 in energy costs over the product lifetime. That is the program’s estimate, not a guaranteed saving: actual costs depend on use, utility rates and the washer selected. ENERGY STAR also estimates an average American family washes about 300 loads each year.

Use both the EnergyGuide label and efficiency ratings
- Compare the yellow EnergyGuide label to see estimated energy use and annual operating cost among similar washers.
- Check the ENERGY STAR product finder for IMEF and IWF. A higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) indicates better energy efficiency; a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF) indicates better water efficiency.
- Check that certification applies to the exact model you are considering. A feature-rich washer is not necessarily certified, and certification does not establish that it fits your space or budget.

Use those categories to compare models, and treat test and survey findings as Consumer Reports’ results—not as a substitute for checking your household’s needs.

Consumer Reports says its predicted reliability measure is based on the share of purchased models from a brand expected to develop problems or break within the first five years. The underlying findings use its 2022, 2023 and 2024 Fall Quarterly Surveys; the brand-level measure is not a guarantee about an individual washer. The guide describes prices as approximate retail. How do you calculate the real purchase cost?
Compare the delivered and installed total, not just the shelf price. Ask the retailer to itemize delivery, installation, haul-away and any required parts or accessories for the exact washer. Verify warranty terms directly with the seller or manufacturer; the roundup does not establish individual warranty details.
Rebates may be available in some locations, but amounts and eligibility vary. Use ENERGY STAR’s rebate finder, then confirm that the specific washer qualifies and that the offer is still active. Do not treat a rebate as a discount until eligibility and application requirements are clear.
Which option is the best fit for your household?
- For the lowest reported price: The Whirlpool Deep Water Wash was listed at $499, but its 3.5-cu.-ft. capacity and lack of ENERGY STAR certification may matter more than the upfront price.
- For a straightforward agitator washer: The Amana was listed at $519 and includes 3.8 cu. ft. capacity, Quick Wash and Deep Water Wash, without app features or a sanitize cycle.
- For a larger capacity with manual water-level control: The GE was listed at $599, with 4.5 cu. ft., a dual-action agitator and a sanitize cycle.
- For flexibility in wash setup: The Whirlpool removable-agitator washer was listed at $589; its stated capacity changes from 4.2 to 4.3 cu. ft. when the agitator is removed.
- For smart features and a large drum: The Samsung was listed at $749, with 5.2 cu. ft., Wi-Fi features and ENERGY STAR certification, as reported by Popular Mechanics.
