For a stylish table, choose rattan placemats by size, shape, set quantity and care instructions—not appearance alone. The examples below range from a 36 cm round hand-woven mat to rectangular options in several sizes, and one product specifically says it is not for food contact. Check the linked listing for the current variant, availability and delivered price before ordering.
How to choose rattan placemats
- Measure the place setting. Compare the mat’s listed dimensions with your plate and the space available at each seat. Round and rectangular styles create different looks, but either can crowd a small table if oversized.
- Check how many you get. A price may cover one mat or a set. Compare like with like, and confirm the selected format in the listing.
- Read the care and use directions. The products below have different cleaning instructions, and MUJI states that its placemat is not for food contact.
- Expect some natural variation. MUJI notes that handmade color may differ slightly from product images.
Rattan placemats to consider
| Product | Shape and size | Listing format | Material and care | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TISECO HOME STUDIO round natural | Round, 36 cm diameter | Unit quantity not stated on the cited product details | Described as 100% hand-woven rattan; page says do not wash | A generously sized round option if you want a natural woven look and can follow no-wash care. |
| Pottery Barn Tava rectangular | Rectangular, 20 x 14 inches | Single mat or set of four, depending on selected format; the single is listed for in-store pickup | Handwoven natural rattan; hand wash | A larger rectangular mat, with a choice of buying one or four. |
| MUJI rattan placemat | Round and rectangular styles; listed rectangular size is 40 x 30 cm | Not stated in the cited product details | Hand-knitted Ketak rattan from Lombok, Indonesia. MUJI says: “Not for food contact, no anti-microbial processing.” Friction or excess moisture may cause color loss. | A choice of shapes for decorative table use where its food-contact restriction and moisture warning are acceptable. |
| Sur La Table rattan placemat | Round, 14-inch diameter | Not stated in the cited product details | Made in Indonesia; wipe with a damp cloth and store in a dry place | A round option with explicit wipe-clean and dry-storage directions. |
| placemats.co.uk handmade Indonesian examples | Round, 30 cm diameter; rectangular, 30 x 23 cm | Both shown as sets of two | Handmade Indonesian examples; care directions not stated in the cited details | A smaller round or rectangular pair if two mats suit your table setting. |
Care varies by product
Do not assume woven rattan can be washed just because it is used at the table. TISECO says not to wash its mat; Pottery Barn says to hand wash; Sur La Table advises wiping with a damp cloth and storing dry. For MUJI, avoid friction and excess moisture because the maker warns they may cause color loss. Follow the instructions on the exact product you buy.
Choose by table and use
- For a large round setting: consider the 36 cm TISECO or 14-inch Sur La Table mat, checking the diameter against your plate and available table space.
- For a broad rectangular setting: compare Pottery Barn’s 20 x 14-inch Tava with MUJI’s 40 x 30 cm rectangular style; they are different sizes, so measure before choosing.
- For a pair rather than a full set: the placemats.co.uk examples are shown in sets of two. Confirm the selected shape and current listing details.
- For direct food-contact use: do not choose MUJI’s placemat for that purpose; its product page explicitly says it is not for food contact.
Check the listing before you buy
Retail pages can change by region and over time. The cited TISECO page displayed €15.50 when crawled, and the placemats.co.uk search result displayed £23.50 and in-stock status; these are not reliable current quotes.
