Which washing machine cleaner should you choose?

These are product-maker directions and compatibility claims, not independent performance tests. Compare the format, your washer’s available cycle, and whether the label addresses routine cleaning or existing odor and residue. Check the product’s current label for ingredient or septic-system considerations that matter to your household.
How to use cleaner in a Samsung washer
- Check the model manual and cleaner label. Confirm which cycle your model supports and follow the directions for the specific product.
- Leave the washer empty. Samsung warns: “Never run a Self Clean cycle with laundry in the tub because this can damage the washer and the contents of the tub.”
- Put the cleaner in the specified location. affresh directs users to place one tablet in the tub, not the dispenser; OxiClean directs users to put its pouch in the drum and not add detergent.
- Select the cycle specified for your washer and cleaner. Samsung models may offer Self Clean, Self Clean+, or Pure Cycle. The affresh and OxiClean directions also describe alternative cycles in some circumstances; follow the label and model manual rather than assuming every cycle is interchangeable.
- Do not combine cleaning chemicals. Use one product according to its directions; do not improvise a mixture.
How often should you run Samsung’s cleaning cycle?
Samsung US recommends running Self Clean, Self Clean+, or Pure Cycle approximately once a month or every 30–40 loads. Cycle length varies by model; Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance estimates about one hour for top-load and four hours for front-load washers. Keep the tub empty for the cycle.
For ordinary routine maintenance, Samsung says bleach is not normally added. Its separate bleach procedure is for mildew smell or visible mold, not a general substitute for the washer’s regular cleaning cycle. That procedure specifies the detergent compartment rather than the bleach compartment and says to start Self Clean immediately. Because model and regional directions can differ, check your model manual before using that method.

What to check if the washer still smells
A cleaner may help address residue, but odors can have other causes. Samsung identifies excess detergent or residue, an unlevel washer, an improperly inserted drain hose, overloaded or underloaded loads, wet laundry left in the washer, and an unclean front-load pump filter as possible contributors. Dry the washer between uses and clean the detergent drawer as needed.
Clean the front-load pump filter
Samsung recommends cleaning the pump filter on front-load washers at least monthly or about every 40 washes, whichever is more frequent. Samsung says top-load washers do not have this filter. Its procedure involves draining water through the small hose, removing and cleaning the filter with a soft-bristle brush, and reinstalling it securely. Water may be hot after a hot cleaning cycle, so let it cool before opening the filter area. Follow Samsung’s instructions for your model.

When an odor persists
Check the washer’s installation, hose position, loading habits, detergent use, and any model-specific maintenance points in the manual. If those checks and the recommended cleaning cycle do not resolve the smell, consult Samsung support or a qualified service professional rather than repeatedly adding cleaner or using an unlisted chemical treatment.
