Choose by identifying the weed, deciding whether you need prevention or treatment, and checking that the exact product label permits use on zoysiagrass. Apply only when the lawn and weather meet the label’s conditions.
Start by identifying the weed
Herbicides are not interchangeable: a product aimed at broadleaf weeds may not control grassy weeds or sedges. NC State Extension lists summer broadleaf weeds such as white clover, knotweed, spurge and lespedeza, while treating crabgrass, goosegrass and sedges as separate weed problems. Use its zoysiagrass maintenance calendar to help distinguish the categories, then select a product labeled for the weed you actually have.
- Broadleaf weeds: Examples include clover, knotweed, spurge and lespedeza.
- Grassy weeds: Crabgrass and goosegrass require a product whose label lists the target.
- Sedges: Treat as a separate category; do not assume a broadleaf or crabgrass product will control them.
Choose prevention or treatment
A preemergence herbicide is intended to prevent weeds before they emerge. A postemergence herbicide is used on weeds that are already growing. The right choice depends on the weed and its stage, and a product must be labeled for both the target and zoysiagrass.
NC State Extension’s calendar recommends preemergence treatment in mid-February to early March in its North Carolina context, and postemergence treatment in May as needed for certain summer weeds. Those are regional guide dates, not universal timing for every climate. In summer, the guidance is to treat only when weeds are present, the grass is actively growing and the lawn is not drought-stressed.

Check the exact label for zoysia and timing
Before buying or applying anything, read the label on the exact container and formulation. NC State Extension advises: “Be sure the product you choose is labeled for use on zoysiagrass.” A similar product name or a different formulation may have different permitted turf, targets or directions. Follow the label for application rate, protective measures, weather conditions and any repeat interval.
Example: Spectracide Weed Stop for Lawns ready-to-spray
Spectracide lists its Weed Stop for Lawns ready-to-spray product for lawns including zoysia. This is an example of a manufacturer-listed option, not evidence that it is the best-performing product across weed types or regions. Verify the label on the product you have: the researched Weed Stop for Lawns Plus Crabgrass Killer 3 label warns, “Do not apply to zoysiagrass just emerging from dormancy, as it may result in lawn damage.” That warning applies to the named formulation and should not be generalized to every product in the Weed Stop line.

Time treatment for the lawn’s condition
Seasonal timing matters as much as the product name. Avoid postemergence applications when the turf is drought-stressed or not actively growing; do not apply the cited Spectracide formulation while zoysia is just emerging from dormancy. If the lawn is dormant, transitioning, recently damaged or under stress, pause and check the product label and local extension guidance before treating.
Some weeds may require more than one application, but do not infer a schedule from the weed alone. Use the selected product’s label for the rate, interval and maximum number of applications.

Prevent future weeds by protecting turf density
Herbicide is only one part of weed control. UF/IFAS notes that zoysia’s dense growth habit can resist weed invasion, while turf damage creates openings where weeds can establish. Its Florida zoysiagrass lawn guide provides regional guidance; local growing conditions and the exact cultivar still matter. Maintaining healthy, dense turf helps reduce opportunities for weeds to take hold.

A practical decision checklist
- Identify whether the problem is a broadleaf weed, grassy weed or sedge.
- Decide whether the weed has emerged; choose a labeled preemergence or postemergence approach accordingly.
- Confirm the exact product label lists both the target weed and zoysiagrass.
- Check that the lawn is in a condition allowed by the label and is not drought-stressed; avoid vulnerable dormancy-transition timing noted on the product label.
- Follow the container label for rates, application conditions and repeat treatments.
