For heavily soiled laundry, start with independent cleaning-test results and a washer with a heavy-duty or heavy-soil cycle—not a promise that any machine will remove every stain. The right choice depends on the exact washer, the stain, the fabric, the load and the cycle. Front-loaders are a sensible place to begin comparing, but capacity, cycle time, cost and local service matter too.
How to judge stain removal
Look for comparative cleaning results from an independent tester where available. Consumer Reports says it washes fabric swatches marked with stains such as red wine, cocoa and carbon, then measures how much the stains change. Its washing-performance score reflects those laboratory comparisons; it cannot guarantee the result on a particular garment or stain. The publication’s roundup was updated June 2, 2026. See Consumer Reports’ washing-machine testing and 2026 roundup.
Consumer NZ’s reviews cover more than 30 washer models from 13 brands, according to its guide updated September 2026. That is useful breadth, but its findings and market context are New Zealand-specific; model availability and service support differ elsewhere.
Front-load or top-load?
As a general type-level guide, Consumer NZ says front-loaders usually clean better than top-loaders, are gentler on clothes and use less water. They also tend to cost more upfront and have longer cycle times. These are group-level tendencies, not a guarantee that every front-loader will outperform every top-loader. Compare the exact models’ tested cleaning performance and practical fit. Consumer NZ’s washing-machine buying guide discusses capacity, efficiency and other purchase considerations.

Which cycles and features matter for heavy soil?
Check the manual for the specific model and look for a heavy-duty or heavy-soil cycle. Depending on the laundry, useful options may also include soil-level adjustment, soaking or a stain-treatment cycle. Names and results vary by machine, so a feature label alone does not establish cleaning performance.
Cycle advice can be model-specific. In its Speed Queen TR7 review, Consumer Reports quotes the manufacturer recommending the heavy-duty cycle for heavily soiled items; that recommendation should not be generalized to other washers. Consumer Reports also reports that the TR7 left clearly visible stains on its test fabrics, a finding about that reviewed model and version—not washers as a category. Match capacity to the laundry you actually wash
Think about the bulk and frequency of loads: muddy work clothes, bulky uniforms or a household’s weekly laundry may call for more room than lightly soiled everyday clothing. Bigger capacity is useful only if it suits your typical loads and fits the installation space; price alone is not proof of better cleaning.
Consumer NZ describes 7.5–9.5 kg as large capacity and 10 kg or more as extra-large in its September 2026 New Zealand guidance. These kilogram categories are not a universal household-size rule; use local model specifications and your usual load size to choose.

What else to compare before buying
- Cleaning results: Give independently measured stain-removal results more weight than marketing claims.
- Clothing care: Consider fabric gentleness, especially if the load includes delicate or frequently washed workwear.
- Water and energy use: Check the specific model’s published figures and local rating labels.
- Time and noise: Compare cycle duration and noise or vibration if the washer is near living areas.
- Fit and installation: Measure the space, including door clearance and any delivery route constraints, and verify installation requirements.
- Ownership support: Check warranty terms, local repair options and service availability in your market.
In Consumer NZ’s 2026 survey, as reported in its September 2026 guide, 88% of front-loaders and 86% of top-loaders remained fault-free after five years. These New Zealand survey results describe washer types in that survey; they are not a model-specific reliability forecast or a guarantee for another market.

Identify whether the load is muddy, oily, food-stained or mixed, and follow the garment-care label and washer manual. Some stains and fabrics need pretreatment or a different cycle; no single program is established as best for every stain.

After washing, inspect the garment before putting it in the dryer. Consumer Reports warns that dryer heat can set a stain that remains after washing. If a mark is still visible, follow the fabric-care instructions to pretreat or rewash, then check again before drying. Consumer Reports’ laundry tips include guidance on avoiding set-in stains.
