The right standalone air conditioner is the one that fits your room’s cooling load and your building’s installation options—not simply the one with the highest Btu rating. Measure the area, use the capacity guide below as a starting point, adjust for sun, shade, occupants, and kitchens, then compare window, through-the-wall, and portable units based on how they can be installed.
What size air conditioner do I need for my room?
Start with the room’s floor area. ENERGY STAR’s room-air-conditioner chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling and pairs the following areas with cooling capacities in Btu per hour (Btu/h):
| Cooled area | ENERGY STAR capacity guide |
|---|---|
| 100–150 sq ft | 5,000 Btu/h |
| 150–250 sq ft | 6,000 Btu/h |
| 250–300 sq ft | 7,000 Btu/h |
| 300–350 sq ft | 8,000 Btu/h |
| 350–400 sq ft | 9,000 Btu/h |
| 400–450 sq ft | 10,000 Btu/h |
| 450–550 sq ft | 12,000 Btu/h |
| 550–700 sq ft | 14,000 Btu/h |
| 700–1,000 sq ft | 18,000 Btu/h |
| 1,000–1,200 sq ft | 21,000 Btu/h |
| 1,200–1,400 sq ft | 23,000 Btu/h |
| 1,400–1,500 sq ft | 24,000 Btu/h |
| 1,500–2,000 sq ft | 30,000 Btu/h |
| 2,000–2,500 sq ft | 34,000 Btu/h |
For an irregular room, estimate its area by dividing it into rectangles, squares, and triangles, then add their areas. ENERGY STAR recommends seeking help if a complicated layout makes measuring difficult. The chart is a baseline, not a custom heating-and-cooling load calculation; rooms with unusually high ceilings or other unusual conditions may need a more tailored assessment.
Adjust for the room’s conditions
ENERGY STAR’s published sizing guidance recommends these adjustments to the chart capacity:

- Reduce capacity by 10% for a heavily shaded room.
- Increase capacity by 10% for a very sunny room.
- Add 600 Btu/h for each regular occupant beyond two.
- Add 4,000 Btu/h for a kitchen.
These are rule-of-thumb adjustments from ENERGY STAR, not substitutes for a professional load calculation where the space or installation is atypical. See ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner sizing and buying guidance.
Why a larger unit can be the wrong choice
An oversized room AC can cool the air quickly and shut off before it has removed enough moisture. The result may feel clammy even when the room is cool, while the larger capacity can also raise purchase and energy costs. DOE warns that oversizing can increase energy consumption and impair humidity removal through excessive on-off cycling. Choose capacity to suit the room rather than defaulting to the largest unit that fits.
Choose an installation type that suits the building
“Standalone” can refer to several kinds of room air conditioner. Their installation needs differ, so confirm the site, opening, and building rules before comparing features.

| Type | What to check | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Window unit | Window dimensions, support, sealing, electrical requirements, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. | It must be compatible with the specific window and installed securely and level. |
| Through-the-wall unit | Whether there is a suitable wall sleeve or opening, plus the unit’s specified dimensions and installation requirements. | A wall opening and the correct unit type are required; do not assume a window model can be substituted. |
| Portable unit | Exhaust arrangement, window or other permitted venting route, and the manual’s operating and drainage instructions. | DOE FEMP’s room-AC efficiency guidance does not cover portable ACs, so its efficiency comparisons should not be applied to them. |
Renters should check lease terms and building rules before installing a unit or altering an opening. For certified models, ENERGY STAR’s product dataset identifies attributes such as capacity, voltage, unit type, mounting, support bracket, and heating mode; confirm those details against the current model specifications and installation manual: ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioner dataset.
Compare efficiency without treating estimates as guarantees
For a window or through-the-wall unit, check whether it is ENERGY STAR certified and compare the efficiency information for models in the same category. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) guidance covers specified window, through-the-wall, and reverse-cycle room AC categories; it explicitly excludes portable units. Its figures are useful for understanding a modeled comparison, not predicting an individual household’s bill.
In its 2024 guidance, DOE FEMP estimated lifetime energy-cost savings of $167 for an ENERGY STAR-level unit compared with a less-efficient baseline, using a 12,000-Btu/h unit, 750 operating hours per year, an electricity price of 11.1 cents per kWh (the federal-facility rate as of July 2024), and a nine-year product life. Model-efficiency data were from December 2024. DOE’s “best available” example estimated $189 in lifetime savings against the same baseline; the agency noted that more efficient models may have entered the market after the guidance was created. These are modeled federal-facility comparisons under stated assumptions, not universal savings promises. Details are in DOE FEMP’s room air conditioner purchasing guidance.

Check comfort, controls, and operating features
Once capacity and installation fit are established, compare the features that affect day-to-day use. Availability varies by model, so verify each item in the current specifications rather than assuming it is standard.
- Compressor operation: A variable-speed compressor can adjust its output instead of only cycling between full capacity and off, according to ENERGY STAR.
- Sound and room layout: Compare noise information where the manufacturer provides it, and consider where the compressor and airflow will be in relation to occupants. ENERGY STAR describes some U-shaped or saddle-style window units as placing the compressor outside the room while allowing the window to open and close.
- Air direction: Check whether the louvers can direct cool air where it is needed without blowing directly on occupants.
- Connected controls: Some models offer remote on/off control, scheduling, or energy feedback; these features are not universal.
- Refrigerant: ENERGY STAR identifies R-32, R-454B, and R-290 among lower-global-warming-potential options for room ACs. Check the specific model’s current specifications to confirm its refrigerant.
- Support and ownership: Review warranty terms, service information, seasonal removal or covering needs, and any drainage or leveling instructions.
Install and operate the unit to protect comfort and efficiency
Follow the unit’s manual for the exact installation. ENERGY STAR advises using the included insulation materials and leveling the unit so that drainage works as intended. It warns that improper installation can allow as much air leakage as a 6-square-inch hole—a program statement about installation quality, not a model-specific test.
Quick Recap
- Keep lamps and televisions away from the thermostat so their heat does not affect its reading.
- Set the thermostat as high as is comfortable; ENERGY STAR gives 78°F as a typical setting.
- On humid days, use a lower fan speed to help remove more moisture.
- Use an extra fan to distribute cooled air through the room when helpful.
- Consider removing the unit for winter to reduce heat loss, or use a properly sized cover if the unit will remain installed.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Measure the cooled floor area and use the ENERGY STAR chart as a starting point.
- Apply the published adjustments for heavy shade, strong sun, extra occupants, or a kitchen.
- Identify whether the site calls for a window, through-the-wall, or portable unit, and check the installation instructions and building rules.
- Compare capacity and, for categories covered by DOE FEMP, relevant efficiency information without treating modeled savings as a personal bill estimate.
- Verify current model dimensions, voltage, mounting details, controls, refrigerant, warranty, and service information before purchase.
