For demanding Alaskan-mill work on larger logs and thick slabs, the STIHL MS 661 C-M is the strongest-supported starting point: Granberg recommends it for that kind of milling, and STIHL lists it at 5.6 in³ displacement and 7.2 BHP. That is manufacturer guidance and published specification—not proof from a controlled test that it outperforms every alternative in every setup.
Which STIHL chainsaw suits Alaskan-mill work?
Match the saw to the log size, wood, frequency of use, and mill configuration. Granberg’s general guidance is that a 70cc saw can suit occasional milling or smaller logs, while regular milling of larger logs or hardwood calls for 90cc or larger. These broad guidelines are not guarantees of performance. The MS 661 C-M is the better-supported choice here for demanding work; the MS 462 C-M is a conditional option for smaller or less frequent jobs.
| Saw | Published specification | Best-fit role | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| STIHL MS 661 C-M | 5.6 in³ displacement; 7.2 BHP (STIHL product page, accessed 2026) | Larger logs, thick slabs, and more demanding milling, based on Granberg’s recommendation | Requires a properly matched mill, bar, and chain; no controlled head-to-head milling test establishes a universal winner. |
| STIHL MS 462 C-M | 5.9 BHP (STIHL product page, accessed 2026) | Conditional lighter alternative for smaller or less frequent milling | Do not treat it as equivalent for regular large-log or hardwood milling; Granberg’s general guidance points to 90cc or larger for that work. |
How to choose for your logs and workload
Log size and wood
Consider the diameter and species of the logs you plan to mill. Larger logs and hardwood put greater demands on the saw. Granberg warns that an underpowered saw may take longer, overheat, or fail, so choose conservatively rather than relying on engine figures alone.
How often you will mill
For occasional work on smaller logs, Granberg says a 70cc saw may be suitable. For regular work on larger logs or hardwood, its broad recommendation is 90cc or larger. The cited STIHL pages provide power figures, but the available sources do not establish a controlled comparative milling result for these two models.

Weight and practical handling
The MS 462 C-M may be considered when a lighter alternative is useful, but its suitability depends on the job. The sources cited here do not provide a comparable weight table or evidence that it can replace the MS 661 C-M for demanding large-log milling.
Match the bar, mill, and usable cutting width
An Alaskan mill mounts to the guide bar, and the bar length must suit the width of the logs you intend to cut. Nominal bar length is not the same as usable milling width: the mill’s brackets and mounting hardware occupy part of the bar. Check the Granberg Alaskan mill model chart and your actual bar configuration before assuming a cut width.

For the MS 661, STIHL’s manual lists supported 3/8-inch pitch, 0.063-inch gauge combinations, including:
- 25-inch bar: 84 drive links
- 28-inch bar: 91 drive links
- 32-inch bar: 105 drive links
- 36-inch bar: 114 drive links
These are manual-listed combinations, not a guarantee that every saw or mill setup uses them. STIHL says to use listed or otherwise conforming combinations. Confirm the saw’s actual configuration and consult its manual before ordering a bar or chain. MS 661 C-M instruction manual

Choose a chain that fits and is made for milling
Granberg recommends a sharp ripping chain designed for milling. Match the chain’s pitch, gauge, and drive-link count to the bar; a matching nominal bar length alone does not establish compatibility. Check the saw manual and the mill guidance before use.
See Granberg’s milling FAQ for its guidance on bar space, chain fit, and underpowered saws, and its general Alaskan mill guidance for saw-size recommendations.

What the available specifications do—and do not—tell you
The published BHP and displacement figures describe manufacturer specifications, not milling speed, cut quality, durability, or safety in a particular setup. The cited material contains no independent named performance statistic or controlled comparison of these STIHL models in Alaskan mills. Treat the MS 661 C-M recommendation as a manufacturer-supported starting point, then verify the complete saw-and-mill configuration for your work.
