For many households of five, a washer rated at 4.5 cu. ft. or larger is a sensible place to start. The right choice also depends on how often you wash, whether the family regularly has bulky bedding or sports gear, and what will fit through the laundry-room doorway and into the available space. The models below are examples to compare—not independently tested winners.
What size washer does a family of five need?
Maytag says a 4.5 cu. ft. or larger washer can help a large household keep up, while emphasizing that the right capacity depends on laundry habits (Maytag’s washer-capacity guide). Whirlpool likewise classifies 4.5 cu. ft. and above as large capacity for households of three or more. Its approximate guide lists 11–21 bath towels per load, but towel sizes and machine designs affect how many fit (Whirlpool’s washer-capacity guide).
Use that figure as a starting point, not a guarantee that every load will fit. Think about your actual laundry routine: how frequently you wash, whether loads include uniforms or sports clothing, and whether you often need to wash sheets or comforters. A larger drum can reduce the need to split some loads, but it cannot compensate for a machine that does not fit the room or is routinely overloaded.
Choose capacity around your largest recurring items
Whirlpool says a washer of 4.5 cu. ft. or more should typically handle a king comforter. Maytag suggests about 5.0 cu. ft. or more may be needed for one. Because the recommendations differ, check the selected washer’s instructions and the comforter’s care label. Do not force an item into the drum or pack it tightly; it needs room to move during washing (Whirlpool; Maytag).

How to compare washers for your household
Start with the laundry-room layout
Drum capacity describes the interior, not the washer’s exterior footprint. Whirlpool’s general large-capacity range is about 27 inches wide, 39–44 inches high, and 27–34 inches deep; individual models vary (Whirlpool’s guide). Check the exact model’s dimensions, required clearances, door swing, water and drain hookups, and the route from the entrance to the installation location. Measure the doorway and turns along the delivery path as well as the spot where the washer will sit.
Front-load and top-load machines also differ in how they use room around the washer. Consider whether a front door can open fully, whether a top lid has clearance, and whether the machine needs to sit under a counter or be stacked. ENERGY STAR notes that certified washers are available in varied widths and capacities, including stackable and under-counter configurations (ENERGY STAR’s clothes-washer guidance).

Compare water and energy use
ENERGY STAR says full-sized certified washers use 14 gallons of water per load, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine. For certified models, it recommends comparing a higher Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and a lower Integrated Water Factor (IWF); consult the specific model’s listing for its figures (ENERGY STAR). Running full loads when appropriate can also help avoid unnecessary cycles, but follow the washer’s loading guidance rather than stuffing the drum.
Prioritize cycles your family will use
Think about the recurring problems a feature would solve. A quick-wash option may be useful for lightly soiled items when time is tight; steam or specialized cycles may suit particular laundry needs; automatic detergent dispensing can reduce measuring; and delayed-freshness features may help when a load cannot be moved to the dryer right away. Compare the actual cycle descriptions and conditions in the model documentation instead of choosing by feature count alone.

How to make laundry day more efficient
- When appropriate, wait until you have a full load, while keeping clothing within the washer’s loading guidance.
- Use a high or extended spin when suitable for the fabric; ENERGY STAR notes that removing more moisture can reduce drying time (ENERGY STAR).
- For a front-load washer, ENERGY STAR says leaving the door ajar for an hour or two after use can help moisture evaporate. Keep child safety in mind and follow the owner’s manual.
- Clean and maintain the washer according to the manufacturer’s instructions, including any model-specific care steps.
