How to Choose a Water Filter for Everyday Drinking Water

The best everyday drinking-water filter depends on what you need to reduce. Match the exact contaminant claim to a third-party certification, then account for replacement and maintenance.

The right water filter is the one certified to reduce the contaminant or concern in your water—not a universal “best” filter. Check your utility’s water information or the relevant health or environmental agency, then verify the exact product and reduction claim in a certification body’s directory before buying.

What water filter is best for everyday drinking water?

Start with the water concern you want to address. Filters differ: one may reduce lead, another a specified PFAS, and another may mainly improve taste or odor. A standard number by itself is not enough; the product’s certification must include a performance claim for the contaminant you care about. EPA’s consumer handout puts it simply: “Different filters remove different impurities.” U.S. EPA consumer handout

  1. Find out what is in your water using your utility’s water information or the appropriate health or environmental agency.
  2. Choose a filter whose claim names the contaminant or concern you want to reduce.
  3. Look up the exact product in the relevant certification body’s directory and confirm the claim, not just the standard number.
  4. Check the filter format, replacement schedule, replacement availability, and maintenance costs before deciding.

Which certifications should you check for lead?

For lead reduction, EPA advises looking for NSF/ANSI 53 with a lead-reduction claim. It also recommends NSF/ANSI 42 for Class I particulate reduction. The standard number alone does not establish that a product reduces lead: confirm the exact claim for the specific product. EPA’s consumer tool, dated June 6, 2024, covers filters evaluated to reduce lead to 5 parts per billion or less; that figure describes the tool’s scope, not a guarantee for every filter. EPA lead-filter consumer tool EPA lead-filter guidance

Which certifications should you check for PFAS?

EPA advises looking for a relevant PFAS-reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 53 or NSF/ANSI 58, then checking the certifier’s directory to confirm which particular PFAS the product is certified to reduce. Do not assume that a generic “PFAS” statement, or a standard number without the matching claim, covers every PFAS.

As of April 2024, EPA cautioned that then-current certifications did not indicate removal to the levels in EPA’s newer drinking-water standard. That dated qualification is important: a certification claim should not be treated as proof that a filter brings water below every current health or regulatory benchmark. How do common home filter types compare?

EPA identifies granular activated carbon (GAC), ion-exchange resin, and reverse osmosis (RO) as home-treatment approaches that can reduce PFAS when appropriately selected and maintained. These technologies are sold in point-of-use formats such as pitchers, faucet-mounted units, refrigerator filters, and under-sink systems. The format does not prove performance: verify the exact product’s claim.

Option What to verify Practical trade-off
Pitcher, faucet, or refrigerator filter Certification for the specific contaminant or concern; check the exact model in the certifier’s directory. Convenient point-of-use formats, but capacity is limited and replacement cartridges are part of the ongoing cost. EPA’s PFAS guidance gives broad prices of about $20 to more than $1,000 across filter types and brands, excluding maintenance; these are guidance ranges, not current retailer quotes. EPA PFAS filter guidance
Under-sink system using GAC or ion-exchange resin The same contaminant-specific claim and certification; confirm replacement requirements and availability. May require more installation space or effort than a pitcher or faucet unit. The sources do not establish a universal price or performance level for this format.
Under-sink reverse osmosis Verify the specific PFAS or other reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 58, as applicable, in the certifier’s directory. EPA says a typical point-of-use RO system can generate five gallons or more of reject water for every gallon treated. EPA’s stated RO price range is $150–$1,000, excluding maintenance; it is not a current retailer quote. EPA PFAS filter guidance EPA Point-of-Use Reverse Osmosis Systems

What should you include in the real cost?

Purchase price is only part of the decision. Filters have limited capacity, and performance depends on replacing cartridges or membranes and following the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions. EPA states: “Filters are only effective if they are maintained according to the manufacturer’s instructions.” EPA PFAS filter guidance

  • Check how often the manufacturer says to replace the filter or membrane.
  • Confirm replacement parts are available for the exact model.
  • Include replacement parts and other maintenance in the cost over time; EPA’s broad price ranges above exclude maintenance.
  • For RO, factor in reject water as well as the system’s purchase and upkeep costs.

How to avoid choosing the wrong filter

  • Do not assume every pitcher or faucet filter reduces lead or PFAS.
  • Do not treat a standard number or broad marketing phrase as proof of a specific reduction claim.
  • Do not rely on an old product listing in place of the certification directory; model claims and availability can change.
  • Do not buy a system without checking its replacement schedule and the cost and availability of its consumables.

EPA’s guidance supports a selection method, not a model-by-model ranking. It does not identify one product as the best choice for every household or water concern.
