Consumer Reports says washers larger than 4.5 cubic feet fit king-size comforters in its tests; comforter size, thickness, fill, care instructions, and the washer manual determine whether your specific item is safe to wash at home. No current model-level evidence establishes a definitive “best” washer, so use the criteria below to compare machines.
How much washer capacity do you need for a comforter?
Consumer Reports’ buying guide says washers over 4.5 cubic feet fit king-size comforters in its tests: Consumer Reports washer buying guide. Its comforter guidance says the room required varies with the comforter’s size, thickness, and fill; some manufacturers recommend at least 5 cubic feet for most king-size coverings: Consumer Reports: washing a comforter. Treat these figures as a starting point, not a promise that every king comforter will fit.
A comforter needs space to move through the wash and rinse. Check its care tag and the washer’s owner manual before buying or washing. If the manual does not address your item, or it would be packed tightly into the drum, use a laundromat machine with sufficient capacity or a professional cleaner when the care label calls for it.
Which washer type should you choose?
Consumer Reports describes front-load washers as gentle on fabrics and effective at extracting water, which can help reduce drying time. HE top-loaders can also handle comforters, though they may be rougher on fabrics. - Front-load: Consider this style if fabric gentleness and water extraction matter most, and the specific drum and manual accommodate your bedding.
- HE top-load: It can be an option for comforters; take extra care with delicate fabrics and follow the machine’s directions.
Compare stated capacity alongside usable space, washer dimensions and installation clearance, available bulky/bedding or delicate cycles, and the manual’s guidance for bulky items. A large-capacity washer is only useful if it fits the installation and can safely accommodate the comforter you own.
How to wash bedding safely
- Read the comforter’s care tag. Follow its instructions for machine washing, water temperature, detergent, and drying. Some materials, including wool and silk, can be damaged in a washer. Maytag new product brand manager Sarah Armstrong advised reading the care tag and using professional cleaning when needed in Consumer Reports’ March 5, 2024 article: Consumer Reports comforter-care guidance.
- Check the washer manual. Confirm the comforter’s size and type are appropriate for the machine, and use only cycles the manufacturer recommends.
- Inspect seams and stitching. Repair loose stitching or tears before washing to reduce the risk of further damage.
- Wash the comforter by itself. Give it room to circulate and rinse rather than crowding it with other laundry.
- Choose a cycle suited to both item and machine. Use bulky/bedding when the label and manual support it. Consumer Reports says bedding cycles often combine high- and low-speed agitation. Delicate may be more appropriate for delicate bedding or a machine that handles fabrics less gently; neither cycle is right for every comforter.
Plan for drying before you wash
Check the care label before tumble drying. When tumble drying is allowed, Consumer Reports says low heat is generally best and drying can take a while: Consumer Reports comforter-drying guidance. The article cites Maytag’s recommendation for a dryer with at least 7 cubic feet of capacity. Pause during drying to fluff the comforter; wool dryer balls are an optional aid that Consumer Reports says may reduce clumping and help air circulate. Allow enough time for the comforter to dry thoroughly before putting it back on the bed.

Compare water and energy information carefully
ENERGY STAR says full-sized certified washers use 14 gallons per load, compared with 20 gallons for a standard machine: ENERGY STAR washer guidance. These are program-level figures, not a guarantee for every model or wash cycle. When comparing particular washers, use their current product labels and compare like with like; also check the manual’s capacity and bedding-cycle instructions.
