What a voile valance does—and what it does not do
A valance is a short treatment across the upper part of a window. It can conceal a rod or other hardware and make the window treatment look more intentional. Voile is sheer, so a voile valance offers a light visual finish but does not provide substantial privacy or block room light like blackout fabric. If sleep or daytime naps call for a darker room, use a suitable room-darkening or blackout shade as the functional layer, with the voile valance above it or alongside it. Which valance style suits the nursery?
These are style directions, not a tested ranking or rules that apply to every room. Consider the window’s proportions, the existing curtains or shade, and whether the valance solves a real decorating need. A matching piece from a bedding set is not automatically the best choice for the window.

How to check fit and mounting before you buy
- Measure the specific window. Do not assume two nursery windows are identical. Record the width available for the treatment and the drop you want.
- Match the header to the hardware. A rod-pocket valance has a fabric casing that slides over a rod. Clip rings can be used with some sheer or unlined drapery, but only if the product is designed to attach that way.
- Compare finished dimensions with the listing. Check finished width, drop, pocket size, and any stated rod or hardware requirements. Product dimensions and mounting details vary.
- Check fullness and overlap needs. RH Baby & Child’s drapery instructions discuss measuring to the nearest 1/8 inch and allowing for width or overlap. Those are recommendations in that retailer’s guide, not universal standards for every valance.

Fabric, light, and care: details to verify
“Voile” signals a sheer look, but it does not tell you the exact fiber blend, lining, finish, or care method of a specific product. Read the listing or label for composition and transparency, and check whether the valance is lined. A reference description of voile is available on Wikipedia; because that page notes citation needs, use the product’s own specifications for buying decisions.
Care is product-specific. RH Baby & Child recommends dry cleaning for its own drapery to reduce shrinkage and discoloration; that instruction cannot be generalized to all voile valances. Follow the chosen product’s care label and choose a fabric and cleaning method you can maintain.

Keep nursery window coverings child-conscious
When planning the whole window, consider cordless options and avoid leaving long dangling shade cords within a child’s reach.
