For a rigid plastic basket designed to stack and provide access to the load below, Sterilite’s 2 Bu. Stacking Laundry Basket, model 1288, is a direct match. Brabantia’s 35-litre Stackable Laundry Box is a different option: it is made of fabric and folds flat when empty. Choose by checking the real space available, how you’ll reach and carry laundry, and whether you prefer rigid plastic or fold-flat fabric—not by relying on a “best overall” claim unsupported by comparative testing.
What to compare before choosing
- Footprint and height: Measure the space for one basket and the total height of the intended stack. Check each product’s published outside dimensions; capacity labels alone do not tell you whether a basket will fit.
- Access while stacked: A front opening can make a lower basket easier to reach without moving the basket above it. A top opening is useful when the box is not blocked by another basket.
- Carrying: Compare handle or grip design and the product’s stated weight, where available. The manufacturer descriptions do not establish which basket is more comfortable to carry.
- Empty storage and material: Rigid plastic keeps its shape; fabric that folds flat takes a different approach when the basket is not in use. Neither specification establishes a durability advantage.
- Capacity and number of baskets: Consider whether you want one container or separate baskets for sorting. The listed capacity measures below are not directly reconciled by the manufacturers.

Rigid plastic: Sterilite model 1288
Sterilite describes model 1288 as a 2-bushel plastic basket with handles that fold in to create a stacking surface. Its drop-front opening is intended to let you reach contents while baskets are stacked. The handles rotate outward for carrying, and the manufacturer says the rectangular hole pattern promotes airflow. Those are listed design features, not independent evidence of easier carrying, odor control, or long-term performance. Sterilite also lists the basket as made in the USA, BPA-free, and phthalate-free.
There is an important fit-check issue: Sterilite’s page gives two different sets of outside dimensions. Because it does not explain why, do not base a close-fit installation on either measurement without confirming the dimensions with the manufacturer. When the two-pack may suit your setup
Sterilite’s model 1289 is a set of two baskets, each listed at 2 bushels, with the same core stacking and access features as model 1288. It may suit a household that wants separate loads in matching baskets. The manufacturer repeats the same conflicting dimensions on its product page, which also does not provide independent evidence about load capacity, stack stability, or longevity. Fold-flat fabric: Brabantia’s 35-litre box
Brabantia’s 35-litre Stackable Laundry Box, model 120428, has both a top opening and a front opening. The U.S. product page lists a grey fabric construction, a weight of 1.5 kg (3.2 lb), and dimensions of 44.5 × 37 × 32 cm (17.5 × 14.6 × 12.6 in). It describes lightweight grips and says the box folds flat when not in use. Brabantia lists a two-year guarantee and says the product is made in China. Brabantia says the box can hold a complete machine load; treat that as the manufacturer’s description, not a guarantee for every washer or load. Its stated 35-litre capacity and Sterilite’s bushel capacity are different measures, and the product pages do not provide a direct conversion for comparing usable laundry volume.

Which design fits your laundry room?
- Choose a Sterilite-style rigid basket if you want a firm plastic container with a drop-front opening for reaching a lower basket. Confirm the correct exterior dimensions with Sterilite if the available space is tight.
- Consider the Sterilite two-pack if separating loads in two matching baskets matters more than having one container.
- Consider Brabantia’s fabric box if fold-flat storage and both top and front access suit your routine. Check its listed dimensions against the space where it will sit, including room for the openings.
Measure and plan the stack
- Measure the location. Record the clear width, depth, and height where the baskets will stand. Include any trim, shelves, doors, or nearby appliances that limit access.
- Check the product footprint. Compare the published exterior width and depth with the measured space. For Sterilite models 1288 and 1289, resolve the dimension discrepancy with the manufacturer before relying on a close fit.
- Plan access to every level. Leave room to use front openings and, for Brabantia, the top opening. Think through how you will remove a full basket and transfer laundry to the washer.
- Check the intended stack. The product pages describe stacking features, but do not establish a tested maximum stack height or comparative stability. Follow manufacturer guidance and avoid assuming that a larger stack is safe simply because baskets are labeled stackable.
- Decide where empty baskets go. A rigid basket retains its form; Brabantia says its fabric box folds flat. Choose based on the storage space you actually have.
