How to use a humidifier safely
- Measure room humidity. The EPA’s indoor-air guide recommends relative humidity of 30% to 50%. The EPA’s humidifier guidance says not to exceed 50%.
- Use only as needed. Do not run the device continuously by default. Reduce output or stop using it if condensation or damp surfaces appear.
- Empty and dry the portable tank daily. The EPA recommends emptying and drying it daily, then cleaning it every third day. Follow the device manual if it gives specific care instructions.
- Use water approved for your model. Low-mineral water may reduce mineral scale and dispersal for some devices. Follow the manufacturer’s water requirements.
- Do not add oils or unapproved substances. Mayo Clinic advises not to add anything to the water; follow the maker’s instructions for your specific device.
- Stop if symptoms seem linked to use. The EPA advises stopping use and contacting a physician if respiratory symptoms appear associated with the humidifier, even when you have followed maintenance instructions.
