For a STIHL FS 45, the AutoCut C 5-2 is the clearest tap-feed replacement-head choice: STIHL lists it as suitable for the FS 45, and the FS 45/46 manual covers its installation. If you prefer loading precut line by hand, STIHL also lists the DuroCut 5-2 as suitable for the FS 45/46. These are compatibility recommendations, not results of a comparative performance test.
Which trimmer head fits the STIHL FS 45?
STIHL identifies the AutoCut C 5-2 as suitable for the FS 45. The FS 45/46 instruction manual also covers installation of the AutoCut 5-2/C 5-2. Confirm the exact model marking before ordering; heads in the same product family are not necessarily interchangeable.
The DuroCut 5-2 is another STIHL-listed option for the FS 45/46. It uses precut lengths of nylon line rather than the tap-feed approach.
Compare the compatible options by the job

STIHL recommends a nylon-line head near trees or fences because line provides a softer cut with less risk of bark damage. For a lawn edge without plants, the manual says the PolyCut 6-3 can cut better. That does not make it a universal upgrade: choose according to the edge and use only a head approved for the FS 45.

Can you put a blade on an FS 45?
No metal blade. The FS 45/46 manual explicitly warns never to use one on this trimmer. It also prohibits wire, metal-reinforced line, or other material in place of nylon cutting line. Do not treat a blade or line marketed for another trimmer as compatible unless STIHL documentation for the FS 45 specifically approves it.
Choose the correct nylon line
Line thickness and length depend on the installed head. Check the instruction card for that specific head for the correct diameter and length; STIHL’s trimmer-line replacement guide likewise directs users to the head’s instructions.

Use the FS 45 deflector with its line-limiting blade properly mounted whenever using a mowing head. The blade keeps the nylon line at the proper length. STIHL warns that excessively long line can overload the engine, cause overheating, and damage components.

Install and inspect the head safely
- Use the STIHL FS 45/46 instruction manual and the instruction sheet supplied with the exact head. Confirm the head model and its compatibility before installation.
- Make sure the deflector is properly mounted and its line-limiting blade is in place before operating a mowing head.
- Load only the nylon line specified for that head, following its instruction card for line diameter, length, and loading method.
- If using a PolyCut 6-3, stop using it if a circular hole becomes visible or its projecting rim has worn away; STIHL says to install a new head.
