The best toilet seat bolt kit is the one that matches your toilet and seat’s mounting system—not a kit advertised as universal. Before ordering, identify the seat or toilet model, check whether the fasteners attach from below or from above, and compare the replacement parts with the manufacturer’s instructions.
What toilet seat bolts do—and what they don’t
Toilet seat bolts fasten the seat hinges to the toilet bowl. They are different from closet bolts, which secure the toilet itself to the floor flange. A product listing for “toilet bolts” may refer to either kind of hardware, so confirm that the kit is for a toilet seat before buying. Oatey’s toilet bolt information describes the floor-flange hardware, not seat fasteners.
Are toilet seat bolts universal?
No. Seats and toilets can use different fastening arrangements, parts and thread patterns. A replacement that looks similar may not fit the hinge or engage the toilet’s anchors. Confirm the toilet and seat models, then check the manufacturer’s replacement-parts information and the existing hardware before ordering. Gerber recommends identifying the toilet model and whether it was supplied with a seat; if it was not sold as a toilet-and-seat combination, identify the seat brand and model as well. Which mounting style do you have?
Standard bolts with nuts underneath
In a common arrangement, bolts pass down through the seat hinges and bowl holes, and nuts are tightened underneath the bowl. The exact washers, gaskets and nuts depend on the seat. Kohler’s standard-seat instructions show the arrangement and note that some bowls have pre-installed metal nuts; in that case, follow the instructions for the seat rather than adding nuts below. Kohler’s standard toilet-seat installation instructions also specify keeping the seat straight and centered and warn against overtightening.

Quick-attach hardware
Some seats use a bolt and a wing nut that engages from below. In Kohler’s illustrated quick-attach system, the wing nut is pushed upward until it catches the bolt threads, then the bolt is tightened from above with a screwdriver. This sequence is specific to that design; use the instructions supplied with your seat. Kohler’s quick-attach instructions describe the procedure.
Top-fixing or model-specific hardware
Some seats are fixed from above using plugs, anchors or other model-specific parts. Geberit’s spare-parts catalogue lists above-fastening hinge sets, toggle plugs and fixing bolts for particular seat families, with distinctions by product and manufacturing period. A top-fix kit is not automatically a universal fit; match it to the seat or toilet model. Geberit’s spare-parts catalogue provides model-specific parts information.

How to choose a compatible replacement kit
- Identify the toilet and seat. Look for the model information on the product or in its paperwork. If the seat was purchased separately, identify its maker and model too.
- Inspect the existing fastening system. Note whether nuts are accessible underneath, whether the seat uses quick-attach parts, or whether plugs or anchors are fixed from above.
- Compare the manufacturer’s parts information. Look for the matching replacement part or hardware set for your model, rather than relying on appearance alone.
- Verify thread and package contents. Check that the bolts match any specified thread pattern and that the package includes the parts needed for your installation—such as nuts, washers, gaskets, plugs or anchors. Do not assume these are included because a listing says “kit.”
Thread sizes vary even within a manufacturer’s products. Kohler gives 3/8-16-inch UNC plastic bolts as an example used on many of its wood seats, and 1/4-20-inch UNC bolts as an example for certain one-piece toilets with anchors. These are not universal dimensions: confirm compatibility for the particular seat and toilet. Kohler’s seat-and-anchor compatibility guidance gives those examples.
How to replace toilet seat bolts
Hardware differs by seat, so the model-specific installation instructions take priority. For a common standard bolt-and-nut setup, use this general sequence:

- Open or remove the hinge covers as needed to reach the fasteners.
- Align the hinges with the holes in the bowl and place the bolts through the hinges from above.
- Fit the specified washers or gaskets in the positions shown in the seat instructions.
- If the bowl does not have pre-installed metal nuts, thread the supplied nuts onto the bolts from underneath.
- Keep the seat centered and straight while tightening. Stop when secure; overtightening can damage the product.
For a quick-attach arrangement like Kohler’s, push the wing nut upward from below until it engages the bolt, then tighten from above with a screwdriver. Follow the seat’s own directions if the parts or sequence differ.
Removing old or seized hardware
When nuts are accessible below the bowl, loosen them from underneath while supporting the seat. Old hardware may be corroded or stuck. The Home Depot’s installation guide discusses penetrating oil and careful cutting with a small hacksaw as possible removal methods for stubborn fasteners. Cutting is a last resort: work carefully to avoid scratching or cracking the toilet, and check the seat maker’s instructions if the seat is a specialty design. What makes a good replacement kit?
Choose by fit and completeness, not by the word “universal” on the package. Before you buy, check:
- Mounting direction: bottom nut, quick-attach, or top-fixing plug or anchor.
- Compatibility: toilet and seat model, manufacturer part number, and specified thread pattern where applicable.
- Included hardware: whether the kit contains the exact bolts, nuts, washers, gaskets, plugs or anchors your setup needs.
- Installation access: whether you can reach the nuts underneath or need a top-fixing system.
A search for “toilet seat bolt replacement kit” can help you find options, but verify the model and fastening style against the manufacturer’s parts information before placing an order.
