There is no proven single “best” brand in the available washer-maker guidance: Whirlpool and LG explain compatibility and use, but do not compare brands in controlled tests.
What makes a powder suitable for a front-load washer?
Look for an explicit HE label and directions compatible with front-load washers. Whirlpool says to use only HE detergent in its HE washer guidance, and LG advises front-load owners to use detergent made for front-load machines. HE detergents are intended for these washers’ use; a product that is not labeled for HE machines may produce excess suds.
These are general compatibility criteria, not a ranking of products. The official guidance available from Whirlpool and LG does not establish that one powder brand cleans better than another.
Where should powder go?
The correct location depends on the washer’s model and dispenser arrangement. Do not assume that a drawer’s compartment or fill line is the same across machines.

For a Whirlpool single-load dispenser
Whirlpool says its single-load detergent compartment accepts liquid or powdered HE detergent. When using powder in that drawer, raise the selector to the powder position and do not overfill. Check the manual for your specific model. Some Whirlpool dispenser configurations direct users to put powder or single-dose packets in the wash basket instead of a bulk dispenser; see Whirlpool’s single-load dispenser instructions.
For an LG front-load washer
LG advises leaving a small clearance at the top of the powder dispenser rather than filling it to the brim. Any fill guidance is model-specific: use your washer’s manual for the compartment and amount, not a measurement taken from another machine. LG’s front-load leak troubleshooting guidance also emphasizes using HE detergent.

How much powder should you use?
Follow the detergent package’s directions and adjust for the load as instructed. Whirlpool says the appropriate amount depends on load size and soil level; LG notes that dosage varies by brand and type. As LG puts it: “Always follow the dosage on the detergent label. Dosage varies by brand and type.”
Using extra powder is not a reliable way to get cleaner clothes. Too much detergent can create excess suds, hinder rinsing and cleaning, extend cycles, leave residue inside the washer, and contribute to leaks or unpleasant odors. If you notice suds or residue, check that the product is HE-labeled and that you are measuring the package-recommended dose for the load. When powder may not be the right choice
Powder needs to dissolve fully. Whirlpool notes that powder can leave residue if it does not dissolve, and older powders may dissolve poorly. For low-speed cycles such as Delicate or Handwash, Whirlpool specifically advises using liquid for best results. Powder may also be less convenient if your washer manual directs it to the basket rather than the dispenser.
Whirlpool describes powder as often concentrated and particularly effective for tough stains, especially in hard water. That is manufacturer guidance, not a comparative test proving a particular powder—or powder in every situation—will outperform other detergents. Consider your cycle, water conditions, fabric needs and package directions when choosing.

What to compare when choosing a product
Since no specific brand or current product data is established here, use the package and your washer manual to compare options rather than treating an unsupported brand ranking as a verdict.
- Compatibility: Look for HE labeling and front-load directions.
- Dosing: Check the directions for your load size and soil level; concentration and scoops can differ by product.
- Cycle suitability: Consider whether the powder is appropriate for the cycles you use, especially low-speed cycles where Whirlpool recommends liquid.
- Stain and fabric claims: Rely on claims stated by the detergent maker and relevant to your laundry, rather than assuming every powder performs alike.
- Scent preference: Check whether the product is scented or fragrance-free if that matters to you.
- Cost per load: Compare current package price and size against the dose the label recommends; a lower shelf price alone does not show which product costs less per correctly dosed load.
Keep the washer clean, too
