The best detergent for an HE washer is one whose package explicitly says it is made for or compatible with high-efficiency machines. There is no supported universal brand winner here: choose among HE-labeled products by their dose directions, format, and fragrance or dye preferences, then use the amount recommended for your load.
What makes detergent suitable for an HE washer?
High-efficiency washers use less water than traditional machines. HE detergents are formulated to clean in those lower-water conditions while controlling suds. Ordinary detergent may create excess suds, which can interfere with washing or rinsing performance. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) explains the formulation difference in its Q&A on using HE detergents.
Check the product package for an explicit HE or HE-compatible label. A brand name or the word “concentrated” does not by itself establish that a product is suitable for an HE washer.
How much HE detergent should you use?
Follow the specific product’s directions and adjust for the load. ACI advises using less for a small or lightly soiled load or soft water, and more for a large or heavily soiled load or hard water. Load size and soil matter; using less water in an HE machine does not mean every load needs an arbitrarily tiny dose.

- Check the package dose guidance for the size of your load.
- Account for how dirty the clothes are and whether your water is soft or hard.
- Pay close attention to directions for concentrated formulas; do not estimate a dose from another product’s cap or scoop.
Using more than directed can contribute to excess suds or the need for extra rinsing. EPA WaterSense recommends using an appropriate amount of detergent to avoid extra rinsing and following the washer manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations in its home-maintenance guidance.

Are Tide or Persil good choices for an HE washer?
Both brands offer products described as compatible with HE washers, but that does not establish either as objectively best. P&G’s Tide HE FAQ says HE detergent is designed for low-water conditions and creates less suds; its explanation of Tide’s suds behavior is a manufacturer claim, not an independent comparative test. Persil’s US FAQ says its detergents are safe for standard and HE machines and work in cold water. Treat these as compatibility statements, not proof of a brand ranking.

For a single-load packet, ACI advises placing it in the drum before adding clothes—not in the dispenser drawer. Its guidance covers top-load and HE front-load machines. Keep packets away from children and store them in their labeled container. Follow the packet’s own instructions if they differ.
