1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe right lubricant for an RV awning depends on its make and model. Several manufacturers recommend silicone spray for moving hardware, while some specify dry silicone; Lippert’s Solera Lumina guide requires 100% dry silicone spray only. Check your awning manual, apply lubricant only to the hardware it names, and keep it off the fabric.
Which lubricant is right for your RV awning?
Use the product specified in the maintenance section of your awning’s manual. “Silicone spray” and “dry silicone lubricant” are not interchangeable instructions when a manufacturer gives a more specific requirement.
| Awning covered by the cited guidance | Lubricant instruction | Where or when to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Lippert Solera Lumina | 100% dry silicone spray only. Lippert says not to use oil, grease, or WD-40 because they attract dirt. Lippert maintenance guide | Follow the guide’s instructions for the moving hardware; do not coat the fabric. |
| Dometic 8700 Series | Silicone spray lubricant as needed. Dometic 8700 manual | Moving parts. The manual also allows candle wax on sliding surfaces to ease operation. |
| Carefree Freedom, as covered by the cited manual | Dry silicone lubricant. Carefree Freedom manual | Lightly spray the joints and/or inside of the channels if they still do not slide easily, after cleaning and drying the arms. |
These instructions are model-specific, not a universal ranking of lubricant brands. The cited manuals do not establish that one brand or product performs better than another.
Where should you apply it?
Apply lubricant to the moving hardware named in your manual, such as arm joints, sliding channels, brackets, bushings, or other specified moving parts. Avoid the awning fabric: the cited manufacturer guidance addresses hardware, not fabric treatment. To reduce accidental transfer, direct the spray carefully and wipe away excess.

Do not apply silicone to zippers simply because a support page mentions it for sticking zips. Dometic’s RV awning FAQ discusses zip maintenance for applicable zip hardware; that is not blanket guidance for awning arms or all awning styles.
How to lubricate an RV awning
- Identify the awning. Find its make and model, then read the maintenance instructions for that specific unit.
- Clean the specified hardware. If the manual directs you to clean channels or arms, remove dirt and debris before adding lubricant.
- Let parts dry when required. Carefree’s guidance calls for cleaning and drying the arms before applying dry silicone to joints or channels.
- Apply a light amount at the named points. Keep the spray on the specified hardware and away from fabric.
- Wipe off excess and operate the awning. Check whether the hardware moves more freely. If it remains difficult to operate, stop and inspect for a mechanical problem rather than adding lubricant indiscriminately.
This is a cautious sequence built from the cited model-specific instructions, not a single procedure prescribed by every manufacturer.

What if the awning still binds?
Lubrication may not resolve a problem caused by dirt, damage, misalignment, or another mechanical fault. Avoid forcing an awning that remains stuck or moves unevenly. Consult the manual’s troubleshooting guidance or arrange inspection by a qualified service provider. Lippert provides Solera awning accessories and repair resources; Dometic directs some repair and replacement needs to authorized service centers or retailers through its RV awning support page.
