Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →If you want an air fryer with documented BPA-free food-contact parts, start with the exact model and the surfaces that touch food—not a broad “non-toxic” label. COSORI’s Iconic, Fritaire’s glass-bowl fryer, and Philips’ HD9650/90 illustrate three different material choices. BPA-free does not automatically mean PFAS-free or PTFE-free, and the available manufacturer disclosures are not independent safety or performance tests.
What “BPA-free” means for an air fryer
BPA is used in some polycarbonate plastics and can coatings or liners. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says its current review supports the safety of BPA at levels found in food for currently approved food-contact uses. The agency’s cited assessment reflects earlier reviews, not a new study conducted in 2026. Its page states, “The FDA continues to review the available information and studies on BPA.” FDA’s BPA overview and BPA questions and answers provide the agency’s consumer information.
For a shopper, the practical question is whether the particular model’s food-contact components contain BPA. Check the basket, tray, crisper plate, cooking chamber, and any removable accessories—not just the appliance’s outer housing. A statement about one model or component should not be generalized to every product in a brand’s range.
BPA-free is not the same as PFAS-free or PTFE-free
These terms describe different substances or material claims. A BPA-free statement does not tell you whether a nonstick surface contains PTFE or other fluorinated substances. Likewise, “ceramic-coated” describes a surface format; it does not mean the surface is uncoated.

The FDA explains that some PFAS are used in food-contact nonstick coatings. It says these substances are polymerized and tightly bound during manufacture, and that studies show negligible amounts capable of migrating to food from these coatings. That is the FDA’s account of the uses it discusses; it is not a blanket conclusion about every PFAS, every coating, or every air fryer. FDA information on authorized PFAS food-contact uses describes the agency’s position.
FDA food-contact evaluations consider a substance’s intended use, including migration and toxicology. That regulatory process does not mean every broad product-marketing claim has been independently audited. FDA’s food-contact substances overview explains the agency’s framework.

Air fryers with specific material disclosures
The following examples are based on the manufacturers’ published descriptions. They are not a head-to-head test, and the disclosures may change by model or production revision.
| Model | Published food-contact material claim | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| COSORI Iconic 6.5-quart Smart Air Fryer | COSORI says its cooking surfaces use a BPA- and PFAS-free ceramic coating; it also describes a stainless-steel structure, tempered glass, and a 304 stainless-steel basket. | A manufacturer-documented option for buyers seeking a coated surface claimed free of BPA and PFAS. Ceramic-coated is still coated. Confirm the exact model and current listing. COSORI’s materials description. |
| Fritaire air fryer | Fritaire describes a glass bowl and stainless-steel accessories, with no chemical coatings on food-contact surfaces. | A different glass-and-steel format. These are the manufacturer’s claims; the cited page does not independently test them or compare cooking performance. Fritaire product information. |
| Philips Airfryer HD9650/90 | Philips says the listed pans, baskets, mesh, trays, racks, and pizza plate are mostly PTFE-coated, while food-contact parts do not contain BPA. | An example of how BPA-free and PTFE-coated can coexist. Philips’ disclosure is specific to HD9650/90 and should not be applied to other Philips models. Philips’ model-specific materials page. |
How to choose based on the surface you want
If BPA is your specific concern
Look for a manufacturer statement naming the exact model and identifying its food-contact parts as BPA-free. If the wording only refers to a basket, do not assume it covers every tray or accessory. Ask the manufacturer about any part the documentation does not address.

If you also want to avoid PFAS or PTFE
Seek an explicit claim for the substance you want to avoid and check which surfaces it covers. A BPA-free label alone does not answer that question. COSORI describes the Iconic’s ceramic-coated cooking surfaces as BPA- and PFAS-free; Philips’ disclosure for HD9650/90 says the listed parts are mostly PTFE-coated despite being BPA-free.
If you prefer glass and steel
Fritaire describes a glass bowl and stainless-steel accessories without chemical coatings on food-contact surfaces. Confirm the included accessories and their materials for the exact product you intend to buy.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
- It can help identify materials: The cited product pages provide manufacturer descriptions for particular models or product lines.
- It cannot establish a definitive “best” by cooking performance: The cited material does not include independent, comparable tests of capacity, crisping, cleanup, durability, or warranty.
- It does not establish independent chemical testing of these named appliances: Manufacturer disclosures are useful product information, but they are not independent comparative safety tests.
- Claims and specifications may change: Verify the current model number, included parts, and manufacturer wording before purchase.
Two FDA figures are easy to misread out of context. The agency says its BPA review covered more than 300 studies, with that review completed in 2014; this is historical FDA work, not air-fryer-specific evidence. Separately, FDA reported in 2025 that 35 notifications for PFAS-containing grease-proofing substances used on paper and paperboard packaging were no longer effective after manufacturers abandoned those uses following a January 2025 notice. That packaging action concerns grease-proofing, not air-fryer baskets or cookware. FDA’s phase-out update.
