For heavy-duty work, the best impact driver is usually the one that fits your battery platform and gives you the control, access, and performance your fasteners require—not simply the one with the highest advertised torque. Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL 2957-20 is a strong fit for M18 users who want multiple modes in a compact tool; DEWALT’s DCF860 is a high-output option for 20V MAX users; and Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL SURGE is a specialty choice when lower noise and vibration matter. These are manufacturer specifications and claims, not results from a shared head-to-head test.
What to look for in a professional impact driver
Impact drivers are designed primarily for fastening. Their hammer-and-anvil action delivers rotational impacts through a 1/4-inch hex interface, a format Bosch describes as suited to long screws, lag bolts, and structural fasteners. A standard drill may be more versatile for general-purpose drilling, so an impact driver is not automatically the best single tool for every task. Bosch’s U.S. cordless impact-driver range describes the format and professional fastening applications.
- Battery platform: If you already own compatible batteries and chargers, staying on that system can be more practical than buying into another platform. Check whether a listing is a bare tool or a kit, and confirm what batteries and charger are included.
- Control: Multiple speeds or modes can help match tool behavior to fastener size and material. This matters especially with small or self-tapping screws, where excess force can damage the fastener or workpiece.
- Size and access: A shorter tool may be easier to position in a tight bay or cabinet, but published length alone does not establish how a tool handles in every working position.
- Noise and vibration: These can affect comfort during extended use and suitability for occupied spaces. A hydraulic impact driver is a distinct option to consider when those factors take priority.
- Evidence beyond the spec sheet: Manufacturer torque and speed figures are not directly comparable test results. Independent testing with a disclosed protocol offers a different basis for comparison.
- Local support: Availability, warranty, and service can vary by region. Confirm those details with the manufacturer or an authorized local seller; they are not compared here.

| Bosch cordless impact-driver line | Bosch’s U.S. category includes 12V Max and 18V systems, 1/4-inch hex drives, and category torque up to 1,950 in-lbs. | Milwaukee M18 FUEL SURGE M18 FIDRQ-502X | Milwaukee Tool Europe’s release dated 2026-01-01 lists 113 Nm maximum torque, three speed settings, a 1/4-inch hex reception, 1,200/2,100/3,200 rpm gears, 6,300 ipm, and 1.8 kg including an M18 B5 battery. It claims up to 50% quieter operation and up to 3x less vibration than standard impact drivers, with comparison notes on the release. Which impact driver suits your work?
Choose by battery platform first
If you already use M18 tools, the 2957-20 is the most straightforward of these candidates to evaluate: Milwaukee explicitly lists M18 battery compatibility, four drive modes, and a 4.47-inch length. If your crew is invested in DEWALT 20V MAX, the DCF860 is the platform-aligned option in this group, but verify its full specifications and kit contents for your market. Bosch spans 12V Max and 18V systems, so identify the exact model and battery family before comparing it with either brand.
Choose by fastening control and working conditions
Milwaukee lists four drive modes and a self-tapping screw mode for the 2957-20, which may be useful when the job ranges from heavier fastening to smaller screws. The SURGE takes a different approach: Milwaukee describes its hydraulic powertrain as designed to reduce noise and vibration. Its quieter-operation and vibration figures are manufacturer comparisons, not independent findings, so treat them as claims about the product rather than guaranteed outcomes on every job.

Choose by independent test evidence when available
Pro Tool Reviews’ comparison, published 2025-09-20, says it tested 12 tools for torque, driving, and loosening, while also considering size, weight, assist modes, and design. It named the FLEX FX1371A its overall winner. That is the publication’s result under its comparison—not a universal ranking, and not a test of the four candidates above as a common group. Read the Pro Tool Reviews comparison.
How to interpret torque and speed claims
The headline figures above come from manufacturer product pages or category materials, except the independent comparison’s stated winner. They do not establish a like-for-like ranking: brands may measure or present performance differently, and the available materials do not provide one common protocol for the candidate models. In particular, Bosch’s “up to” figure applies to its category, not every Bosch impact driver, while DEWALT’s DCF860 figures come from official indexed copy because its direct page could not be opened for fuller detail.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Use published torque and speed as specifications to narrow your shortlist, then weigh them against platform fit, control, dimensions, job conditions, and any repeatable independent tests. Do not assume that the largest torque number will produce the best result for every fastener or application.

- Confirm the exact model and battery family. Check that the tool is compatible with the batteries and chargers you own; Milwaukee lists the 2957-20 as M18-compatible, while Bosch offers both 12V Max and 18V tools.
- Check whether the listing is a bare tool or kit. Verify whether batteries and a charger are included, and compare the complete setup you need rather than the tool alone.
- Match the controls to your fasteners. Look for speed or assist modes if your work includes small screws or self-tapping fasteners, and choose a tool whose published controls suit those tasks.
- Check dimensions and handling for the work area. Compare published length and weight, noting how the manufacturer states weight and whether a battery is included.
- Verify local availability, service, and warranty. These details can differ by region and seller; confirm them before committing to a platform.
Use impact-rated 1/4-inch hex bits for an impact driver. Bosch confirms the 1/4-inch hex-shank interface for its range, and Milwaukee references impact-duty driver bit sets on its product materials. Select bits for the fastener and application rather than assuming an ordinary drill bit will fit the driver’s chuck.
